OMG. What if he has fleas? You're going to get fleas.
I don't know how I can be such a sucker for animals but I'd pass that dog, or any other stray on the road, and never even consider bringing a flea bag into my home,
I think Im partially dead inside.
You seriously wouldn't consider stopping to help a lost and scared animal that was in imminent danger of being run over?
juliagoulia, don't forget to check Craigslist and all local vets too.
I think he looks like a Murphy.
I can't go to the zoo or circus because seeing caged animals just about makes me want to cry but no, I wouldn't stop because 1. I'm not approaching an unknown animal and 2. I certainly wouldn't attempt to pick it up or put it in my car.

Both of your reasons are very smart. I am comfortable doing it because I was a foster for a rescue and, I worked as a vet tech- so I have had training in reading animals and handling unfamiliar animals. Of course I didn't handle this one- he just jumped up and made his little happy ass comfortable, lol.
Finnegan was cute too. And any dog name that starts with "Sir".
He's so cute and sweet! I was straightening up out in the garage so nothing could fall over and hurt him or anything while he's out there and he kept following me around and he'd just lay down and whimper/moan when I stopped so I could pet him. He's a ham!
I did put him on FB and I'm going to take him to the vet down the road tomorrow AM to scan him for a chip and see if they happen to know who he is. I felt all around his neck/nape for a chip and couldn't feel one though.
I thought I'd also put up a flier at the stop sign closest to where I found him and maybe the grocery store? We are in sort if a weird area, not tons of houses and there's no central place where a lot of people see- so hopefully we get lucky if his family is looking for him.
I'd also consider posting on the lost/found section of craigslist.
And if he doesn't have a home, he's one lucky boy to have found you!
Make sure to call the local shelter and report him. Also craigslist. We almost lost our dog because she escaped and somebody took her in and never called the shelter or posted on craigslist. We just got lucky that the person's neighbor saw a post we made searching for our dog and told the person.

I checked CL and there are no lost dog things- but I'm making a found post on there now. How much detail should I put in it? Just like "small dog found at XX Road" with the date/time? Colors? Sex? Or leave it vague and make the people describe him?
We don't have a local shelter, I'm going to have to make calls to see if we even have a dog warden /animal control tomorrow, I honestly think the nearest one is in the city which is 30 minutes away. Will definitely see what I can find out though, thanks, all, for the tips! I've only ever worked with animals who were abused/surrendered, so this is slightly new territory!

I think small dog found at XX with the date/time is probably good, maybe a vague mention of coloring if you wanted, and then make them describe him to you. The others are definitely right about that.
It does sound like he had a home between looking like he'd been groomed and how he's so comfortable around you. He's so cute. You're awesome for saving him! I like Finnegan as a name. Or Muppet.
And to pp, there's a major difference between stopping to rescue a pup like this that's clearly not a threat (he laid in the road?!) versus trying to walk up to some snarling, growling monster of a dog. I don't get how you could not at least feel any urge to help an animal, but then again I'm a softie who is eternally thankful to whomever rescued my pup when he was a stray.

Thanks! I stuck with small lost dog at area of X and X roads and the town, with the time and date he was found and gave my cell # and randomized email to contact to describe/claim. I may get a lot of calls with being vague but I'd rather do it that way.
And I like the idea of asking for a pic of him with the family like pp suggested- in case I get a lead from people sharing his pic on fb.
I really do hope he has a family who loves him who is looking for him and we are able to get him back to them. But if not- as long as he likes it here and likes our dogs/cats/kiddo, he's welcome to stay.

So what you're saying is if the animal already lives there he can fart on you with abandon, but for a newbie, ONE LITTLE FLEA AND IT'S CURTAINS! No fair!
Well H got home and the pup was a little scared of him at first- but he got down on the floor with him and let him sniff him all up, then he warmed up.
I threw "Finnigan" out there and H wasn't a fan... I knew I had to come up with something to appeal to him to keep his interest so I said "Walter" (in reference to breaking bad) and he died laughing and said that he does look like a Walter and that completely won him over.
So I guess he is Walter unless we find out otherwise :-P
