LOOK AT HIS FACE.
When I got close to him in my car he LAID DOWN ON THE ROAD so I obviously couldn't keep driving. I opened my door and he hopped in on my lap and started wagging his tail. He's all matted under his belly and his butt and he stinks like a garbage dump. It seems like he was groomed and it's all grown out.
I asked all all the houses on that street and the surrounding ones and no one has ever seen him. I'm pretty sure he was dumped. No tags.
Please tell me not to name him. Please. Help. Help me resist.

Too late...you know you already have...admit it.
Seriously, what a sweetie...I hope he wasn't dumped cause I like to be naive and believe no one would do that. If you can't keep him, you will find him a good home!

OMG. What if he has fleas? You're going to get fleas.
I don't know how I can be such a sucker for animals but I'd pass that dog, or any other stray on the road, and never even consider bringing a flea bag into my home,
I did put him on FB and I'm going to take him to the vet down the road tomorrow AM to scan him for a chip and see if they happen to know who he is. I felt all around his neck/nape for a chip and couldn't feel one though.
I thought I'd also put up a flier at the stop sign closest to where I found him and maybe the grocery store? We are in sort if a weird area, not tons of houses and there's no central place where a lot of people see- so hopefully we get lucky if his family is looking for him.

If he's been groomed at some point and was so friendly, I bet he's well loved but made a big escape. Hopefully the family microchipped him. I can't feel my dog's at all. Hopefully he'll find his owners soon, or, if not, you'll have a new best friend.
You have a dog now. A cute one. Give him a flea bath tonight, if you can. Make him sleep in the garage or similar non-carpeted area, if you have one. Take him to a vet tomorrow... if he has a chip... great! If not, enjoy your new dog named Finnigan!

I think Im partially dead inside.
Lol! I gave him a thorough check for fleas before his little paw came into my house, trust :-) H and I fostered for a rescue for years- so I swear it's like animals have some kind of sap radar for us. We cannot say no.

Also, I hate to add this, but if you can, require his owners to show you a photo or something if you find them. These little dogs can become bait for dog fights pretty easily.

We already have 3! Haha. But we put #4 to sleep last year because of cancer... So I guess the excuse of "we already have 3!" Has already not worked before. Haha!
He's definitely going to camp out in the garage tonight. I will get him vaccinated if I don't hear anything by Monday, but I'll keep him away from our other dogs until then.

Good luck.
I can't feel the chip on my dog or on my mum's but they are quite a bit bigger than that little guy.
If the county SPCA has a FB page there, if you haven't already. Does your community have a FB page? At the vet's and see if they'll fax it over to any other vets in the area. Local non emergency number, that is how you get in touch with the dog warden here. Gas stations? Post office? I've only been on the other side of it trying to find mine in the middle of a bunch of farms. Our area there are a few pages on FB that share all the lost/found pets. She escaped from boarding 6 hours after we dropped her off.
Really hope the little guy wasn't dumped. He is so cute.

I am sorry about the loss of your pet. Even if you don't plan on keeping him, good for you for rescuing this little guy.
