Dogs in the back of pick up trucks?
My husband and I were out today and on the highway. He says "look over there" and there was a large dog and a puppy (big enough you could see him but small).
I felt terrible for them and the large dog kept standing on the wheel well and I thought for sure he was going to jump. We were all going about 65 mph.
I may have ranted to my husband about what assholes these people are because what if they jump out?!
I know people do it but it irks the shit out of me.

I hate it. We have driven behind trucks with dogs in the back that kept standing up with their front paws on the sides of the truck, and my heart about stopped thinking they were going to jump.
apalettepassion.wordpress.com/ WHO IS BONQUIQUI!?!?!?!??!
"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
Yeah.. thats what I was thinking.. what happens in a crash or sudden brake scenario?
I noticed my husband kept a large distance between the truck and us. I told my husband if one jumped we are stealing it because anyone who puts a dog in the bed of a truck doesn't deserve their dog .

Hate it! It is beyond unsafe. What If they get in a wreck or the dogs see something and jump out in the middle of traffic? I stay very far behind any truck with dogs in the bed. The craziest thing I have seen was 3 months ago I am driving home about 11pm after shooting a wedding. It's a small town just south of me so tractors on the road are a norm. In front of me on the road home is an old truck pulling a trailer with a tractor on it. Sitting on the trailer and on the freaking tractor itself is 6 freaking dogs. One was sitting on the drivers seat of the tractor! I immediately slowed down since I know how bad that road needs to be fixed. Oddest thing I have seen in years.

I hate it so much.
I know someone that lost their dog when they put it in the bed of a truck. They had leashed the dog so it couldn't jump out but it still jumped and then was strangled.

There was an article about someone who did that where I grew up last year or two. Exact same situation. I hate people.
My sister is a vet and sees the aftermath of this kind of stupidity all the time. IF they are lucky enough to survive (lucky is a relative term), they require extensive surgery to function/walk again. Most don't make it or have to be put down.
I can sort of accept it in a country context if they're leashed and the leash is short enough they can't strangle themselves.
I think the best option is a secured kennel in the back, which I see fairly often.
My impression may have been the result of living in legit cowboy country for much of my youth. We're talkin' hitching posts outside of bars and horses going through the McD's drive thru. Every other truck had a dog in the bed.
It's a terrible idea, like everyone else has said.
It's also a terrible idea to have your small dog on your lap while you drive. I see that too much around where I live. I don't think people realize the injuries that can occur to their dog or themselves from an airbag coming out of the steering wheel at almost 200 mph.

I cried last time I saw that. It is just so horrible I cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a good idea. I was so terrified the dog was going to jump or fall or get hit with a rock/debris. I thought it was illegal but I don't know.

I was wondering this exact thing today; Except I wasn't driving down the road - I came out of the grocery store and there were two dogs in the back of a truck waiting on their owner to return.
I think DH might would let Wyatt ride in the back of the truck, if I would allow it. There is just no way I could ever let that happen; way to dangerous.
Diva is insane, and has jumped out the window of DH's old truck. I have no idea how she didn't end up hurt. He was on our road, going slow, and there was no traffic. BUT STILL. I no longer let her hang her head out the window.
It's not so much the jumping out that worries me. It's if the truck gets hit, or if a fast stop has to be made, and in general things that an essentially loose dog would be/could be severely injured by.
This! I'm not as worried about them jumping as I am them falling out or getting injured during an accident.
