I hate it.
Five years ago, my dog fell out of our car window at 45 mph because he was barking/lunging at passing cars and we didn't have the window rolled up far enough (I had asked DH to roll it up more a few minutes before that happened). I'll never forget that moment of glancing back and seeing him go out. I thought for sure it would kill him, but we were insanely lucky and he walked away with only a few scrapes.
I don't even let my dogs poke their noses out the window any more. And I get anxious when I see a dog unsecured in the back of a truck. Bad things can happen so, so easily.

It's illegal in a lot of areas and I hate it when people do this. It's so dangerous
Where I live, hunting w dogs is very common and surprisingly it's the norm to have customized crates built into the truck bed, which is about 100 times safer.
I have a farm and a stock dog. She rides in the bed of the truck around the ranch, but we're going like 5 mph. I've let her ride in the bed around town a couple times when I'm only going <25mph for a couple blocks. It's really common around here because I live in a ranching/logging community. That said, I would never let my dog ride in the bed other than the couple circumstances I've described and NEVER on the highway. If she sees other dogs, she's prone to jumping out of the truck. And I am afraid she'd get hurt in an accident as other's have said. I don't judge other people for doing it though. Most of the people I know who do this (including my grandfather) love their dogs like crazy and their dogs are so well trained they would never leap from the bed. IMO it's none of my business. Not the same as locking your dog in the car in hot weather.
