i'd be annoyed. i'd be extra annoyed since this person was a law school classmate and presumably shouldn't have her head up her ass about women working outside the home (not that a woman who does not should be ignored or disrespected in a major RE transaction. it's just extra irritating.).
i wouldn't set the local realtor's office on fire or anything like that, but i'd be annoyed.

When we closed on our house, our realtor threw us a Housewarming party (paid for all the food and supplies and pop).
I would be miffed, but I don't think she meant it as a slight to you. I think she just sucks at re-gifting and wasn't thinking. I agree with drinking the champagne yourself, so then you are 'even."
So I checked, and our Realtor usually takes the client out for a nice meal, which we didn't get. But that in and of itself is the true gift, because she is my MIL. lol.
The last thing I would have wanted from our realtor was to spend even more time with her. lol. Suddenly I'm grateful for the coasters.

Is she newer? That seems like a total cop out. I know I'm abnormal in the industry, but I always give personalize gifts for sellers and buyers. It's one of my favorite parts of my job: dropping off keys and an awesome gift. You definitely have a right to be annoyed.

Yes, she's been at it less than a year. I hired her - after we found the condo on our own - to be nice since I knew she was still building her client base.
Obviously I'm not going to say anything to her but referrals are an important part of her business and I think she should be a bit more careful not to rub her clients the wrong way. I suppose she will learn as she becomes more experienced.

This.
Our realtor gave us a gift card to Ruth's Chris when we bought our house a couple of years ago.
I would be annoyed especially since you knew her as a coworker before you used her as your agent.
We were given a wine decanter ( we think that's what it is, we couldn't tell when we looked it up on the store's website) from our agent. We gave her a gift (besides the commission) that was 3x as much money. H and I laughed about it, but thought it was a weird gift on her part.
Go buy yourself a couple shirts. Wear one while you drink the Champagne.
I would be furious. But I dumped an agent once because he didn't get us a closing gift. Our agent for our most recent purchase got us a nice bottle of champagne and a $500 PB gift card.

I don't think I would have known enough to be annoyed until we bought our first place 6mo ago. Our realtor is a close friend of ours and he still got us a nice set of tools and a $200 Home Depot GC. So now I'll be annoyed with any future realtors that don't measure up.

We got a great gift.
If you can't get a shirt (bc you are female) then I'd return that GC on principle. And I'd consider that the high road since the tailor is acting illegally.

Lol, it's a men's tailor. They don't make women's clothes. Unfortunate for me, yes; illegal, no.
Maybe I will still call and see if they ever customize shirts for women, though.

You're kidding about the tailor acting illegally, right? Picturing some guy who runs a sweatshop in the Philippines that manufactures dress shirts for the mafia.
We didn't get anything from or for our realtor, but I would absolutely recommend her; if we sell our house, we'll go through her too.
We did however get a lovely postcard with our house AND address on it from the selling realtor boasting about selling the house. I think everyone in the neighborhood (maybe even town?) got this. I did not know realtors did that and was pissed and paranoid. Nothing like letting everyone know where the new folks live.

We closed a few months ago and got a ton of booze. Like the realtor filled our kitchen up with hard liquor. Thanks. We're hard core god squad, so we couldn't even drink it.

Um, NO. It's fucking free shit. If you don't like it, don't use it.
Who has time to be annoyed by nothing? If we had gotten the same gift, I would have drunk all the champagne b/c h doesn't drink it and the shirts would have been useless to us. I'd probably give them to my BIL. I've never gotten a gift from our realtor but just the bottle of champers would be cool.
And if your realtor sucks by all means don't use her again. But being annoyed by a gift, much less a truly useful gift? No, that makes absolutely no sense to me. It's crazy really.
If this was meant to be a thank you for your business gift for the huge commission she just earned, she fucked up. I can see being annoyed with this. I would not ignore the customer who undertook most of the effort, were I the realtor.
I don't disagree, but on the other hand, a thank you note that says, "Thanks for the gift that is useless to me" is not exactly Emily-Post-Perfect, either. OP, I'd have been annoyed, but I think your thank you note was off the mark.

What is the tailor doing that is illegal?
ETA: You mean he's acting illegally because he doesn't sell women's shirts? I don't think this is against the law.
Our realtor sent us a really nice silver platter with horses on the edges (it sounds ugly, but it's really nice) since I had mentioned that I wanted to get a few things that were "Kentucky-esque" so I guess H didn't really get anything out of that gift, but he didn't feel slighted or anything.
When we bought the first time, we got a bottle of champagne and some wine glasses. The second time, we got a cool wall clock and fab dinner with our realtor (which isn't as bad as it sounds since she is a close friend).
When we sold, we got nothing from our listing realtor. But I was so over her at that point, I didn't want anything.
Yeah, I'm with you. For higher end properties like yours, a nice gift is standard, and to give something only one of you can use is at best thoughtless and at worst sexist. She would have been better off leaving just the champagne.
Congrats on the condo though! So excited for you guys.

There was no rude thank you note. She sent a nice note saying thank you so much!! and the realtor sent back a note saying sorry it's only men's shirts.
(and responding to kevin arnold too) I misunderstood the original post. Somehow I thought "Yay!! Men's shirts only unfortunately but I figured (H) would like that gift!" was part of the text of op's original thank you note. Sorry. Sorry for accusing you of being a passive aggressive thank you note writer, janegold.
