We went yesterday and it was my first time in about 10 years.
I saw people dressed as Wizards (thinking Gandolph) and people with Elf ears. Is this thanks to the LOTR trilogy?
What about all in the clip on animal tails? People in full on animal costumes- wolves, horses? Walking upright and creeping me out because I kept thinking about an MTV special on Furries.
The wizards and elves have been happening a lot longer than the LotR movies. At least around here the Renn Faire ends up being a little more of a Halloween party, especially when you go at this time of year. We were there on Saturday and I was impressed that people seemed to have toned down the high fantasy costumes. I credit Game of Thrones with that a bit.
The clip on animals tails have been making their way in for a while too. People combine them with ear headbands. I blame anime for that. I've never seen anyone in a full animal costume except for the one guy this year who was wearing an (obviously homemade) felt dragon costume. I liked him.
Keys! I was there yesterday, too. I agree that this just kind of happens at the festival. It has been 19 years since the first summer I worked at one (good God I am old) and it was the same back then.
I like the costumes. I think the animal thing could be traced to Shakespeare, and A Midsummers Night Dream. Bottom bing turned into (at least a partial) donkey. Also, the fairies lead you into the whole fantasy realm. At our Ren Faire, it tends to lend itself to the mythological. They just opened a new attraction- Mermaid Cove.

It was a great day for it! Weather was great. Maybe I wasn't as aware of the costumes before or maybe I always just was drawn to certain costumes.
That must have been fun to work there
I brought DD1 for the first time and she had a blast. Fairy Wing Forest was great, I was a bit disappointed in Mermaid Cove and I think she was too. There wasn't much (2 mermaids) and the FWF was a trail.
She did throw tomatoes and thought Vegetable Justice was one of the best things ever.
We would have stayed longer but we ran out of cash and the ATMS weren't working anymore
