I think it is going to shut down. Both sides need to come to some sort of compromise. The bigger issue is the debt ceiling, I can only imagine what a shit show that is going to be.
I don't know that there is a compromise the senate can make
I live close to San Antonio which has the most military installations in the nation. A LOT of federal employees work there including my dad. I'm terrified. He's the breadwinner. Thankfully I think USAA is going to help those in need if it does shit down.
I just don't see how it can not shut down, with the Senate not back in session until 2pm. They'll reject the House's bill, and send their version down late enough that the House won't be able to vote on it. At this point, I wouldn't be surpised if we're SOL until next week.
I am so stinking mad at Congress, and particularly the far-right wingers for holding the government hostage. If you want to repeal a law, then fucking work on repealing it, don't not fund the entire goverment just to avoid funding the law you don't like.
We'll be watching the West Wing furlough episode and drinking tonight.
In unrelated fed. govt. news: I am absolutely giddy that the Attorney General's office has filed suit against the state of North Carolina for its Voter ID bill
I would like to add that even it a miracle happens and there is no shit down, imagine the number of mans hours wasted today on people (like me!) worrying about it.

Yeah, USAA will offer 0% loans for all federal workers I think (and military for sure if the military pay bill doesn't pass). They had the same option the last time this happened.
Yea. I love USAA for that. My dad will still get his VA and retirement but it might be delayed.

I think it is going to shut down as well. I am a contractor and it is looking like I will still get paid because of how our contract is structured. It really sucks for all the federal employees and contractors though who will be issued IOUs or whatever. I am pretty sure people can't pay their mortgages with that. I am seriously enraged at the fucking tea party. They are fucking with people's lives for an ideological view that the majority has repeatedly shown they don't agree with.
Government shut down. Because the "fiscally conservative" republicans think trashing the economy is a good idea. Next up: defaulting on our debt.
NPR did a story about how much money is lost with a shut down. It was a shitload (can't remember the exact estimated number)
YES, I heard this too, & was pretty shocked @ the daily $$$ loss!! Did a quick search for an estimate, & couldn't find total number, but did find this, which is obviously just a small piece
"Some agencies -- like the National Park Service -- charge user fees. When they close, no fees are collected. On an average day, visitors spend $32 million at National Parks."
Well, this shut down thing has been threatened a handful of times in the past few years and it's never happened. So I think it won't this time.
Lately - but there was one in 1995 and 1996, right? When the republican congress was fighting with the democrat president about funding healthcare among other things (medicare in that case). It is a little too similar for my taste.

A conservative friend of mine has been saying for years that Obamacare would crash the economy. I thought she was being hyperbolic. What I didn't realize she meant is that the republicans would trash the economy in the name of Obamacare. Turns out she was more prescient than I thought.
Neither side is working in the spirit of compromise. Both are acting selfishly and childishly.
It looks like the House may get something together to give things a few more days, here's hoping!
I disagree that the blame lies evenly on both sides. House Republicans are holding their own party hostage. There is no meaning to the posturing they're pulling. The ACA will go into effect, whether or not they shut down the government by refusing to concede.
The American electorate voted, collectively, to re-elect Obama and implement this healthcare plan. Why the minority opinion seems to think it can overpower the majority in this respect baffles me. Particularly when their attempts, at this point, will not have the desired effect. They're playing with peoples' lives by refusing to concede a point of law, and it's unfathomably disgusting.
Not to mention, say, the Supreme Court that upheld the ACA. But who are THOSE PEOPLE even, amirite?

My H is is not considered a 'federal employee' even though all his work(and paycheck) is fully funded by federal money. If the shutdown happens, he won't even get an IOU.
The funding is either processed/approved or not. And if it's "not" then that is it. It doesn't come back in the future, it's just gone
I am sorry that sucks so badly. Will the shutdown cause the funding to cease to exist or just not exist until the government reopens?
Green Eggs and Ham came up in our household this weekend with the kids, and H turned to me and was like, "god, the Tea Party has even ruined THAT for me now."

Honestly, we have no idea what is about to happen.
I'm not sure about the first year of his grant, I believethat is has been approved for the first year, effective Oct 1, BUT there still has to be someone actually processing it to get the money to the university for them to actually pay us. Assuming it is still actually granted.
For the research lab position, we are trying to find out if his last stipend will actually get paid out (again, someone has to be there to do the paperwork) and we also have no idea right now about the salary for the new contract starting in October. They have not confirmed that it has been approved, or if they will even be able to process the paperwork to renew the position.
We can probably take a hit on the lab position and scrape by and he could try to find an adjunct job, possibly. If the grant gets messed up, we are totally fucked.
If the shutdown happens, and none of this stuff was finished being approved it will be slashed when everything re-opens unless it was deemed an"essential project"
I really hope it works out for you guys. It just sucks. My contract specifically is a lot of younger people and we are in a HCOL area I know they have been worried because I know when I was 22 I was living pretty much paycheck to paycheck. I personally am kind of lucky and can't complain because I was already planning on not getting paid for Oct - Dec. I talked with our HR person this morning and it really sounds like it depends on how each contract is structured. I think the company will try and keep people paid but if it turns into a long shutdown I am not sure if they will even be able to do that.
