I don't know that you can start with a PT. I have always needed to see a doctor for a dx and get an Rx for PT before making a PT appointment.
So far my issues have been calf/ankle related; I have always gone to a sports med doctor in an orthopedics practice. I like having PPO insurance because I can go straight to him without paying a PCP app't copay just to be told I need a sports med specialist. The one I see is in my tri club and is an Ironman finisher, so he 'gets' it. I think that is really important. (Not being an Ironman per se, but being an athlete, preferably in the same or a relatable sport.)
