Size varies by brand, IMO. I do think Asos brand specifically runs about a size big, but I've only ever bought dresses. I'm not sure if that is true of tops/pants/etc.
Returns are incredibly easy; they come with a preprinted label and they go USPS so you can just put them in your mailbox. I put something in the mail mid last week and the return was credited to my account yesterday. Usually I order a few sizes and return the sizes that don't work. There's a spot on the return for "ordered multiple sizes" so I figure they expect that and I don't feel too badly about it.

I'm not sure what brands are on there for maternity but Next and River Island tend to run big for me, so I always size down. I shop the UK sizes there because I know them better than trying to convert to US.
I have ordered two dresses and a few sweaters from them. They were different brands, but all were true to size. I returned one dress because it was too short though, but fit everywhere else.
Their customer service is great. One time, I placed an order of three items. I received two of the items, but not the third, even though all three were shown as included on the packing slip. No biggie, I just emailed ASOS to ask if the third had been shipped separately. They replied quickly, within an hour or so, and confirmed that they were shipped separately. Okay, no problem! But they still knocked off 20% from the sweater and credited it to my account for what they thought was an inconvenience. Pretty cool of them! The sweater showed up at my door a day later.

I have only purchased maternity items from ASOS. I was really pleased with the quality. They ran just a tiny bit big on me, but nothing too crazy. Returns are incredibly easy and were credited quickly.
