H and I decided that instead of Christmas gifts for each other, we would like to take a weekend away. No kids, no drama, just the two of us. Since we are in the process of saving money to hopefully buy a house in the spring, we want to keep the cost down.
For those familiar with the NE area (we're outside of Philadelphia), give me some recommendations for a weekend away in the $500 range. Is this even possible? We could go more but my goal is to put it around that amount. We would like to drive, no airfare. And it will probably be either early December or January so obviously it will be cold and some things will probably be out.
Right now we are looking at either Boston or, just staying local, and doing New Hope, PA. Neither of us have ever been to Boston and would like to but I would hate to worry about snow with a 6-7 hour drive ahead of us.
I did just tell him that I am demanding a trip to an island next year. All I want is a swim up bar and a hammock. LOL
If you're worried about driving, look into Amtrak, Megabus or Bolt Bus instead. H takes one of the three from Boston to Philly at least once or twice a week. Amtrak can be pricey but not if you book far enough in advance. Megabus and Bolt Bus are both super cheap (like $20 pp each way) and you'd probably save money between gas and parking in Boston. If you plan to stay in the city in Boston, you won't need a car.
Go to Kentucky. Do the Bourbon Trail (free). Get your bourbon passports stamped and send them in for a free shirt. Plus free bourbon after the tours, and usually bourbon balls. Go to the Louisville slugger factory. Go to slade Kentucky and rock climb, or hike, but definitely get Miguel's pizza. Camp everywhere you go. Koomer ridge campground in Slade is decent and in the middle of a lot of trail heads. Go to Mammoth Cave and take a day to do cave tours, and either back country camp (free), or use the camp ground.
Ahhh...Just noticed you want to go in December/November. If went closer to March/April, the above would be great.
I think that time of year the Condos and what not in Myrtle Beach are out of season and inexpensive. I remember looking at one that was $500 for the entire month, and usually $1,000 a week during season. So you could stay there for a weekend. What about Port Clinton, Ohio? It's on lake Erie, and I think there are a few wineries. Is there anywhere you two really want to go sight seeing?
