If you have a 1 story house did you use a baby monitor?

Our room is right next to the room that would be the nursery. The baby would be in our room to start. Will I want a baby monitor?

Yea. Tiny NYC apt here and we still use one.

ETA I'd be able to hear her at night without it but right now watching TV in my living room I wouldn't be able to.

Yes. Our walls are thick and because of this we still use a baby monitor. We can't hear him without it. Even if we could, piece of mind thing, you know?

I would probably get one anyways, so you can look in on baby without going in and disturbing them.

Yup. The video monitor has been a life saver, especially in the middle of the night when we want to see if it's just whimpering that will lead to falling asleep or the precursor to a full blown hissy fit.

Also, it's great for being able to do outside chores during naps.

We did. We keep our bedroom door shut due to our dogs and a window A/C in the summer so I wanted to make sure we could hear him. I'm a pretty heavy sleeper too.

Ours is a video monitor but we never used the video, just audio ( you can turn the video screen off).

I would. For DD we were right beside her, I just got a normal sound monitor. It made me feel better at night. But, during the day I would use it when she was mapping and sit outside or clean out my car or play with the dogs outback and it was nice to have the monitor to hear her then.

Small apartment and we used a web cam starting around week 5 (when I actually let him sleep in a different room than me) to week 12 (when I said screw it, I will hear him). It was helpful in that 7 week period, for sure, but we only paid about $60 for it (downloaded apps on our phones to see it).

I had one, we absolutely did not need it, lol. We have a 1500 sqft house with wood floors. Noise travels. A monitor was completely unnecessary in our situation.

eta: we had one, but we never used it. It was always off.

Yes. We were next door to his room too but had a video monitor. It saved me a thousand trips a night. I'm sure I would have been up and in his room with each noise.

Only because we got one for free, otherwise we did not plan on getting one. It is not a video monitor though.

We have a small apt, bedrooms are next to each other and we can see the entire room from our living area.

No. I own one, but never used it. I now have a second kid and a big house and still never use it. I was given a video monitor and don't use that either.

No, but DD was older and a lot louder once we moved to a one story. When she was a newborn, she could cry and not wake us up when she was just one room over. If I could do it over, I would buy a video monitor. Probably unnecessary, but it would be nice to be able to look in without disturbing her.

We did too because of thick plaster walls in our old house.

We did. We are both fairly heavy sleepers. Later on we got a video monitor, but not until she was like 2.

Yes. I wanted a movement monitor. I still use the audio portion, and most times I hear him before the powersave feature is triggered and the second cry is transmitted. But it helps to crank it while I sleep (we don't co-sleep).

Hm, I don't know for you. Our bedroom was at the end of the hallway, a few rooms down from the nursery. Plus, my husband snores. And even though I am a very light sleeper, I felt better with a monitor.

Yes. The video monitor is super helpful in determining if she is really "up" or is she is fussing herself to sleep. We also sleep with a fan and I'm a sound sleeper so the monitor helps.

We have a IP camera, and we downloaded apps on our phones and ipad to watch her. I also record her movement at night onto my computer.
We chose the IP camera because once we do not feel the need to have it in DD's room we could use it for security or something. And it also can be set so that we could watch her on our phones from anywhere. We thought this feature would be useful to use as a nanny cam later on.

Yes, video to distinguish who needed us. But bonus, the microphone is fucking awesome, so it's perfect for nighttime. We use it mostly at night and when we need it for naps (to shush or if someone wakes up early).

Yes. In the kitchen with the water running I kept thinking I heard him. I also go outside and bring it with me. I could never just be out there and not be worried he was up crying.
