his room is right next to ours, and also right off our living room.... but we still have one. We got a cheap video monitor (like $100). Hes 3 now... we don't have it on all the time, but i'll turn it on for a second to check and see if hes asleep or moving around ( so I can tell how long it took him to fall asleep after I put him in bed, or in the mornings i'll check to see if hes starting to wake up so I know how much longer I have :-) ) Its also nice for naps when you want to do something outside- you can take it with you and keep tabs on them.

Ditto CST, we like it to know if she's really up. Plus my husband snores so I wear ear plugs. We wouldn't hear her without it. I love our video monitor.
Yes. The video monitor is the best. Being able to see her to determine if I needed to get up or if she could settle herself back down was wonderful. She's two now and we still use it. A lot of times it's to talk to her if she's having a hard time settling down - a couple of it's okay or lie down honey and she's out.
We just have the basic. No fancy video or anything. But sometimes when you're sleeping it's nice to have that security blanket. We didn't start using it until after she moved to her room.
Also, sometimes when I'm in the kitchen and if I have the fan on when I'm cooking I can't hear her as well, so the monitor is a BIG help. We have one in the kitchen and one in our room.
I would want the monitor only because it gives you so much freedom. You might want to take it in the bathroom with you while you take a shower. Even though the baby's room might not be that far away, you might not hear her over the running water without the monitor. Also, during the day, you might want to work in the yard while she naps or even just sit on the patio and drink your morning coffee.
