Our national guard drill weekend just got cancelled. Thankfully for us, it's only an extra $300 that goes into savings, but a ton of people in my shop live paycheck to paycheck or are students who only see their drill pay and GI bill money. Unfortunately national guard wasn't exempt like the rest of active duty. I do have an automatic payment from that check that goes to dental insurance, though. I need to figure that part out... Bright side: DH doesn't have to work this weekend at least and they gave us a few days notice to plan on the income loss.
I have so many coworkers who have absolutely no income right now. Many hoped they'd at least get drill pay to hold them over until the end of this, but I guess not Fucking Boehner.
I really wish the politicians (ALL of them) could truly understand how this shutdown is impacting actual people, instead of just using the idea of a shutdown as a pawn for their own political goals. People won't be able to pay their bills!!!! No political goal is worth that.
My BIL is in the NG as well. He is also in school, his teacher is threatening a 0 because he can't get the right paper work she is requesting to excuse him from something the weekend he will have drill. He is trying to get ahold of his CO to get him to sign something that he hopes she will accept, but I kind of want to go punch this lady.
He is hoping it's an easy fix, but is ready to go up the chain at school.

Tell him to get a hold of the student VA on campus. They have great resources and professor outreach.

Thanks! He's getting a bunch of advice on FB so I think he has it covered (my MIL is killing me, she's all "GET ON THE NEWS! DON'T LET THEM HURT YOU! YOU ARE MILITARY!" )

Ok now I've had it lol.
If I clue in as to how close I am to the story I'll "out" myself to anyone irl who could read this so I'm sorry I have to vagueGBCN here but,
There is a wedding (actually 24 this weekend but only one I personally know) to take place this Saturday at the Jefferson memorial Of course the couple found out tues they would not be able to do it there if still on shutdown. So Washington post does huge article, they get on the today show yesterday about it and everything.
Now of course having a ceremony site sucks, etc. However, both bride and groom have jobs that are not federal, so "all" that's messed up for them is the site.
I go back and forth between but this is their wedding and it should be perfect blah blah blah Then I'm all like but wait, what about all the real families who won't be able to pay bills and eat etc, they seem a bit more deserving of a spot on today show. Like hey look, WE are being effected, our lives are being fucked with in a financial way here with possible lasting effects. Not like oh we only had five days to move our ceremony from one place, to the site of our reception. We had to make a phone call!! Maybe two!!!
