***Thanks for all the responces, I found his family!***
Hi, I am a long time lurker and sometimes poster from the nest (I was wmugrl). I found a sweet dog wandering my neighborhood with no tags this afternoon. DH and I were working in the yard and this dog just wandered into our garage and flopped down in the shade. It was probably close to 90 degrees and this dog is seriously overweight so I gave him some water and let him rest. I took him to my vet and had them scan him but there was no chip. Other than putting up found dog signs and putting an ad on Craigslist what else can I do to reunite him with his people?
Also, if I don't find his owners (how long do I wait?) how should I go about finding him a home? He is so sweet and gets along perfectly with my two dogs and cat but we just can't handle another pet right now. I will keep him as long as it takes but permanent isn't an option.
Sorry for so many questions but here is a pic. What kind of dog do you think he is?
Oh he is so cute!!! thank you for watching over him.
I would not put a picture of him on CL. just a vague description - you never know what crazies are on craigslist. I would also notify the area shelter/humane society and perhaps local vet offices in your area besides the one you took him to so maybe they can post an ad about him as well.
I hope you find his home or a new better one soon. Be careful, because I bet that smile will grow on you and before you know it, he'll be yours forever!

Oh sweetness! We give a vague description on CL and any found posters so people will describe the dog to us. I would also report him found to the SPCA and ask them how long the legal hold period is for a dog without tags. It's ten days here, so I hold the pet for ten days and then start looking to place it or coracting rescues to courtesy post.

He looks like a pit/maybe boxer mix. I know someone with one who reminds me of him.
When we got our pit, she was loose and had no collar or chip. We called around and the shelters basically said someone had probably let her loose in hopes someone would find her since bringing her to a shelter would be a death sentence (no pits allowed to be for adoption in Houston or something like that). We kept her, and she was a great dog!
If I had to guess, I'd say boxer and or pit mix...he looks like a sweetie, I'm sure he's so glad you guys took him in even if its only temporarily! Ditto everyone else's suggestions, but I wanted to throw one more out there. If you aren't able to find his owners and absolutely can't keep him any more, the Cincinnati SPCA will take in any dog surrendered to them and do not euthanize adoptable dogs (meaning dogs without major health or behavioral issues beyond what their vets, trainers and behavior people are able to work through). My sister and her FI used to volunteer with the SPCA a ton, she's told me a ton about what they do and from what she told me there's great people there They have a location in Sharonville I believe, and at least one other in the Cinci area but I'm not sure where.
I'll keep my fingers crossed you're able to find his owners or a new home on your own...but if you're not, the SPCA should be able to help. Good luck!
Thanks osulori, I actually used to volunteer at the Sharonville SPCA a few years back. I just know how thin shelter resources can be spread at times and I figure if I have the means to care for him while I find him a home then that's what I should do.
I am crossing my fingers that I can find his owners.
Looks a LOT like our pit/boxer mix. The only difference is ours is chocolate, not brindle, and has more of an underbite. Exactly the same eyes though and very similar pattern of white on the chest/feet.
