When I put my kid in timeout, do I hold him there when he tries to get up? He's 21 months. Right now I'm just picking him up & putting him down repeatedly. He won't even sit long enough for me to walk away. Help.
I think 21 months is a tad young for time outs. Minutes in time out is supposed to be their age, so at 21 months, you're looking at a minute or two - not long long enough to really be effective.
To answer your original question, NO, you are not supposed to hold him there. You're supposed to keep putting him back until he stays on his own. It could definitely take awhile.
You can do a "time in" which is what we've been doing with our 24 month old for a while. We just take her to our specified spot (we call it time out because that's what her daycare calls it) and sit with her. We help her calm down and talk about what she's done and sit with her for a while before going back to whatever we were doing. We only use it for things that we've talked about, not the first time we have an issue with something. It has worked really well for us.
