I know around the nest, Dicks was always the example of a place to NOT go get running shoes. My husband needs a new pair, but we know what brand we were looking for and had a coupon for Dicks, so we just went there.
While browsing, we met the shoe area manager. He asked if we needed any help and I said we were good, just looking for a certain style of Brooks. He told me they don't carry it, but had other suggestions. I was a bit dismissive, mostly because I was prepped for him to know nothing.
Turns out, he's been working in running shoe sales for years, and he was telling us that Dicks has been focusing on re-vamping their business model to accommodate running as a specialty. He says that the new stores that are opening up all have treadmills and staff trained the same way running specialty store staff is trained - to look at foot structure, how you walk/run and how to properly fit and test shoes.
I thought it was really interesting. Of course, this is not true for all existing Dicks locations, but new ones (and eventually all of them).
