Aren't you living on someone's couch and about to have your car repo'ed? Perhaps participating in a gift exchange isn't the wisest move for you at the moment.
Wait, what?
Let's clear a few things up. 1) I said my car was WEEKS away from being repo'ed which was a HUGE exaggeration. Let's clarify what WEEKS mean...it could mean 6 weeks, 10 weeks or 11 weeks. At which point I'll have a consistent income and bills will be back on track. 2) I'm crashing with a friend in her one bedroom because I'm on a contract gig and didn't want to sign a lease or overextend myself financially by living in a studio. I'd prefer to live with a roommate, but my friend offered the couch as she won't be here November-January (for her own contract gig - where I'll be helping her with housing because a friend lives where she is going) and needed someone to watch her cat. So it's a win/win for the both of us. 3) I assume the gift exchange is for the holidays and will have a deadline for sometime in December (as we did last year) which means that yes, I can afford a $25 gift.
The GBCN/nest gift exchanges are like the only presents/surprises I get at Christmas. I’m in. I know MMM is wanting to do one, I may do that one too.
helpful tip, give your real name or use your home address so your boss isn't wandering around the office going "Is there a FARMER here??"
I am not sure if I am in or not. I want to be, and my gift I received last year was great, but I ended up buying for a lurker and I didn't think that was as much fun as picking something out for someone I "know". I guess for me I would want to know if it's mostly regulars or if there are going to be a bunch of people I've never heard of (or seen since) too. I know that sounds grinchy and I'm normally all about including everyone so maybe that's a good indication I should stay out

Also, we will need to see if Canadians are welcome in the exchange, I personally don't mind shipping cross border (I can always buy online anyway) but last year there were only 2 of us canadians in the exchange so Hanna Maren and I ended up buying for each other which took a bit of the surprise out of it!

Well, maybe we could do a "ice breaker/get to know" post for all those who do it. I wasn't too familiar with my person either, so it was kinda tricky, but I know even the lurkers want to be included. So maybe this will be a time to call them out so to speak.
And no, you shouldn't stay out. You could get someone awesome this year and it's always fun to receive gifts!
I'm in, so long as it won't overly complicate matters with an APO address (costs the same as shipping within the US, but requires a customs form, and shipping times are sometimes longer than normal).
I would also be willing to ship to Canada, if we have Canucks participating. I'll have to ship some Christmas gifts to Canada, anyways.
ETA: I'd also be happy to ship to other countries. A couple posts down reminded me that we have more than the US and Canada represented on this board... Maybe whoever organizes can ask for people to indicate if they are OK with the shipping issues of sending a gift to international destinations?
There is a difference between allowing lurkers and less frequent posters to participate. Did lurkers participate last year?
I don't mind buying a lurker a gift (although this obviously would be less fun than buying for someone I "know"), but I'm too paranoid to have my address going out to a complete stranger who could have created an account two hours ago. But obviously group consensus wins, and those of us who don't agree can just withdraw.
I don't say this to make a pity party, but this is the type of the occasions when I'm sad that I don't live in the US. I'd love to participate but I don't see the logistics working out

We can just exchange gifts and act surprised to find out we have each other, haha.

I am in! I agree that it's sort of creepy to have your address available to someone who's never posted. Maybe we need a post minimum of 100 or something? People who want to do this can start delurking NOW so they're eligible.

I believe the S&B board banned you from their exchange this year. The gift apparently ended up being returned to sender in February after delivery was attempted three times and you didn't go pick it up from the post office.

Ya, I went to the post office 4 times to pick it up. They kept telling me they didn't have it. I was so annoyed. I blame my roommate for taking the notice off the front door and not bothering to tell me about it. Or at the very least put it on my bedroom door. Oh well, at least the sender got the gift back. NBD. Ban away.

That's annoying. I'm only reporting. I've not participated in any of the exchanges. I find the drama surrounding them to be endlessly entertaining though.

I agree. It is very entertaining and hilarious.
I participate because it is fun to get a gift from a stranger. I still use my gifts from last year. Can't remember who gave what, but I still use my coffee mug and shower gel.
