Stealing but it is super extra really bad stealing when it is like $700 worth of groceries and you are generally allotted $200. It is less bad stealing (but still stealing) if it is like $15 over what you are given in benefits.

You are a fucking hosebeast (lol - yw).
At least it's groceries and not pricey electronics? Groceries are beneficial and necessary.
(I hope people don't turn this into a 'no skittles' argument.)
Sound the alarms, lhc went for backup! Can you not fight any of your fights on your own? I mean really, just once, I'd like for you to show up and not get all butthurt when you don't have your posse with you.
Yeah it's really hard for me to say. I like PP's distinction above.
So, yeah, it's stealing. But on the scale of "badness," I definitely give a pass to people who responsibly took advantage, over those who excessively did.
And, on the third hand, it's also groceries so like....can we really blame people, IN THIS ECONOMY, during a fucking shut down, after the healthcare tech system when to shit, for taking advantage?
I dunno. I guess I can't judge. On Saturday in MA the entire EBT system went down and they wouldn't accept them, so I guess this is better than that.
Lord knows I tried to take advantage the one time target misquoted the price of a Britax carseat. They figured out the mistake, but at the time I was all sweaty/hurried trying to hit complete order before they figured it out.
It didn't work but I think I got a gift certificate out of the deal.
I'm not taking sides, but I am questioning why you're removing all responsibility from adults and placing it on Wal-Mart's (whom I'm not particularly fond of) shoulders.
Side note, some Republicans are going to glom onto this occurrence and say, 'OMG ABUSE OF THE SYSTEM I KNEW IT NO FOOD STAMPS FOR YOU'. Can't wait.
In part because there is a set procedure in place that every other store managed to follow except for Walmart. $50 and then shut it down. Instead, Walmart supervisors let open the floodgates and allowed people to purchase way more than a typical person with an EBT card would *ever* purchase.
And yeah, some Republicans will use this for fodder, but in the end the only people that will listen to them are people who think that way anyway.
Tough call. I mean, they knew they were abusing the system when they did it, but for most of them it may have meant a lot to get a little extra AND Wal Mart continued to let them do it. I'm not really sure how any of the are going to pay it back if they were required to do so.
Also the reason I sort of give these people a pass is because of all the unrest going on with our govt. Shutdown, risk of not having money to pay for FS etc. I get how people would get a bit enthusiastic about the situation.
It wasn't right. I can't totally blame them though. If I were in their shoes I maybe would have done the same.
At the end of the day it's about integrity, you know right from wrong, you either do the right thing when no one is looking or you don't. If you KNOW there is a glitch and you take advantage of it, it's wrong. Justify away all you want. I'm not speculating on Walmart's motives and why they didn't just cap a limit at $50 or not take EBT until it was fixed. But I know that if I have $200 on my card and there is a glitch and I can now get as much as I want and I do that, it's messed up and I'm doing the wrong thing. If I have every intention of paying it back, that's different, but did these people who decided to use the system glitch to get more than their allotted amount have the intention or belief they would pay it back, or that it was a free for all?
I get that it's food and we all need food to live, but it doesn't make it any less wrong.
But, really, is it not important to promote some level of self-responsibility? Otherwise, we are screwed.
I see the self-responsibility in that they didn't all try to burn the store down, it was relatively orderly, and when it came to an end they all left without a peep. I just can't fault these people for trying.
I'm curious how many people saying "stealing" would buy an airplane ticket that is on sale for $5 due to a glitch, knowing that it was a glitch, and still expect it to be honored.
I seem to remember a lot of "that's awesome, good for you!" when someone posted about that happening to them recently.
I don't remember that post, so I might be off here.
To me, the difference is this. If I buy a sweater that the Limited accidentally marked $10 when it should have been $100, good for me bad for the Limited. They should have checked their prices.
When I go to the Limited and write a check for $100 and I *know* I don't have the money to cover that check? Well, then that's a different story.
These card users knew they had a limit, and they took advantage of the system being down.
I'm really glad our measure of human decency has now disintegrated to "they didn't burn the store down."
Also I know what Pagas is saying, and if it was any other place but WalMart I'd agree. I think I almost always see loading trucks, though -- I have never known a WalMart to be empty for long. If it was a small grocery store I would agree w her -- community mindset and whatnot.

My issue would be the people shopping at Wal-Mart the next day won't have any groceries to choose from.
They would. Walmart has been having a huge issue with stock being delivered and just sitting in the back. I would imagine that for most of the non-perishable items they had stock ready to be brought out.

Well jesus, Pixy. If the standard of self-responsibility is that they didn't fucking riot, you're uh...not really expecting much here huh?

Lets say I am a single mom that used her last.money on cab fare to get to Wal-Mart and needs formula for her kid ASAP. In my experience, the typical Wal-Mart shopper isn't able to put off shopping a few days.
lol at the "typical" Walmart shopper taking a cab.
Actually, there are quite a few cabs up by the one near me, b/c the buses don't go everywhere and a surprisingly high percentage of the population in my town don't own a car. It's $10 round trip (from the farthest end of town to the WalMart), so if you are able to buy your month's worth of groceries from EBT and save up the $10 for the cab fare every month it's kind of your only option. Also they will take a cab from the WalMart to the closest bus stop (it's about 1/2mi? give or take).
ETA so is this typical, I don't know, but it isn't unheard of. I can see a scenario where this could feasibly happen regularly.

Not really, no. Walmart basically opened its doors and said, "Free food while the gettin's good!"
