I'm in the planning stages of a DIY ottoman, but essentially it starts with a Craig's List/thrifted coffee table, so I doubt that's what you're talking about.
On Design Star last night (well, last night is when I watched it on DVR), one of the contestants made an end table out of a tree stump. Then he drilled holes into it and planted succulents in the holes for a "living" end table. Genevieve Gorder wanted to hump it.
I wanted to - and even attempted to on a small scale. It was too much work. I just bought some cheap ones off craigslist & refinished them. I did find a lot of ideas on pinterest though.. may still have a few pinned on my living room board.
We had dinner at a friend's house who "made" their own coffee table. They found a used one on craigslist that had a great base. They then had the extra granite from their bathroom remodel cut into a top for it (I think he said it was $20 to cut). It looks really cool and cost $35 total.
It's very heavy. I would suggest screwing two 2X4s together for the legs instead of using 4X4s because if the 4X4 wood is even slightly moist it will twist as it dries, making the table uneven. The table we built will eventually go on the back patio and we'll build something different (maybe the factory cart table) for the living room.
We looked all over for a nice basic dark wood coffee table and couldn't find anything. I looked on Craigslist for awhile, but still never found what I wanted. So, my husband built me this coffee table. Sorry about the crappy picture, it wasn't the easiest to take and it's getting dark. And please ignore the lack of a centerpiece:
It started with the top, which was an old butcher block kitchen table. He removed the legs and built the base with wood purchased from HD. The legs on the table were store bought from Lowes. Those legs have screws that should screw into the top, but he took those out and secured the legs another way. I suggested he look at Ana Whites blog for plans, but he made his own. I think it's a pretty basic design and I've seen many on her blog that look similar.
The hardest part was getting the stain even because the top is butcher block, which means it is many different strips of wood. I think it that makes it look a little rustic.
We found a smaller butcher block table on craigslist and he is currently making me side tables to match the coffee table. Although, we are adding some other details to one of the tables. Here is the first one he made. I need to stain it to match.
I found this desk one Censtational Girls blog and decided to add the detail to one of the side tables:
As a broke college student, I made a coffee table out of pvc pipe and a leftover glass table top my aunt had. Unfortunately that glass table top did not survive the roommates of my college years.
