I am trying to make this same decision right now! I am leaning towards the more expensive Surface as well, since I like that it has the full Office package. What I can't tell is, does it COME with the Office package on it, or can it just support the package? As in, do I have to pay extra to then buy Office?
We have both an Ipad and a Surface. DH and I both prefer the Surface. The Ipad is now just a toy for Finley, neither of us use it. And it cost about twice as much.
What Surface did you buy and did it come with Office?

I bought one last week (the smaller one) and yes, it comes preloaded with Office. I love it so far! It's really nice having the keyboard for when I'm doing actual work.

I am glad you asked this because I am currently trying to make the same decision. Just to make it harder the new kindle fire hdx looks awesome too and the price is right.

Ok YAY! This is really good to know. I think the only difference then - provided that they both have Office - is one has Office Home and one has the Office for businesses.
Does it have a camera on it? I am hoping I can also use it to Skype with my H when I'm OOT...
I'm thinking of getting a Surface when my laptop dies (will be soon; it's 4+ years old and showing its age). Maybe H will be up for a trip to Best Buy to look at them today...

Does it sit on your lap comfortably with the keyboard attached? Or does it have to sit on a table?

I tend to use it on the couch with a pillow and I use the kickstand and keyboard comfortably with that. Typing on the actual screen isn't bad at all either.
I have both (through work). I mainly use the iPad for Internet/games. I use the surface when I need to do actual work. If I had to pick only one, it would definitely be the surface for Office and USB access.
X-tek (on Amazon) makes a bluetooth keyboard and case for the IPad. It cost me $30 dollars including shipping. I like that I can put the keyboard wherever I want.
For work and grad school, I find that Pages, Keynote, the adobe app,etc...is all I need. I just send everything through email to my work.
