UPDATE: So, it looks like to me that the nub is more parallel with the back than pointing up, indicating girl. I can't be sure that what is pointed out in the scan above, though, is the true nub, but if it is then the nub theory predicted girl.
If your baby doesn't move around enough to open its legs at the 12 wk ultrasound to get this shot, you won't be seeing any nubs. That's what happened at my visit. My MFM even patiently waited a few more minutes but the baby's legs didn't budge.
I wouldn't buy anything yet but the tech guessed right with our first two girls at the NT scan. They guessed girl again this time, which is likely but we are waiting confirmation at the a/s.
My OB told me it's not accurate, but it's still fun to guess! The 20 week u/s was more reassuring (and confirmed my own NT scan nub guess for my little girl btw).
I believe in it. Google "in gender ultrasound prediction" and "babycenter ultrasound board." Both boards have real techs that look and make a guess on the nub. You will have to specifically call Turtle, the tech, out on babycenter to get her guess.

I let my tech take her best guess because we were getting the DNA results from Mat21 anyhow. She was correct and looking back at it if she was looking at what I thought she was then it was no contest as his nub was completely perpendicular to the spine. Where in OPs pictures the same spot looks very parallel, but again I'm not certain that I was even looking at the correct thing. Important to remember is that the umbilical cord is only slightly higher up so that makes it even more difficult if you're not a pro at interpreting ultrasounds.
There's a pin going around on Pinterest that says you can tell by your earliest ultra sound based on what side the placenta is on. Weird right? Let me see if I can find the pin to link...
