Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed. - G. K. Chesterton
The garden looks so serene. I love this pond but could never have one; we have very large oaks with mountains of leaves in the fall.
I agree I love the look of this but it wouldn't work in my yard. I especially like the sculpture in the pond that creates something to reflect in addition to the fountain. I would love to sit nearby and enjoy a good book on a nice summer day.
I do admire formal gardens, though it's not a style I would implement in my own home. My personal taste trends much more towards a very informal style.
But I love walking thru them, looking at the arrangements and plants and artwork. I've been to the Alhambra and several formal gardens in Germany, Austria and Ireland. There's always something amazing and unique in each. I love the symmetry and balance. I especially love looking at modern takes on a traditional formal garden, like the terracing at the Easton Walled Gardens.
However I find formal gardens implemented on your average suburban McMansion hilariously pretentious and always point and laugh at them.
My own personal take on this photo:
I love the pond and the fountain. The sculpture is meh. I would have preferred to see a more modern statement to provide a contrast to the curves and curlicues (which I'm somewhat indifferent towards. I'd need a better photo). It's hard to tell in this photo how this one is structured against the house. I know canal houses have limited space, but it seems somehow off center to the entrance? And I would prefer to see at least a LITTLE color somewhere. Doesn't have to be tulips, since this is Amsterdam and that would probably be cliche, but....

LOL. You're certainly well traveled. I sat through mountains of slideshows of those gardens in school, and they're NMS either. And of course, we had to write papers about them. I wrote about Machu Picchu and the Biltmore.
