When we first got our doberman puppy 5 months ago she made me itch like crazy. No other symptoms, just itching. I told DH and he was all whatever it's in your head. Then I started getting little flesh colored bumps wherever her fur touched me. Now, they are red bumps and much more prolific. I can live with that. But it seems like the symptoms are getting worse over time. Will they keep getting worse? She is a dog that must be pet. She is very persistent and needs human contact. Advice? Should I just go the doctor? Is there some medication for this?
My H is allergic to dogs and cats. Cats more than dogs and short haired dogs more than long haired dogs. The only dogs he does not react to are well groomed, double coated dogs. He takes zyrtec daily and no longer hives with either of our pets (like you, his primary reaction are hives) and only occasionally has sneezey fits.

This sounds like contact dermatitis, which can be brought about by pet dander. I would talk to your PCP about visiting either a dermatologist or an allergist, or both. You can put hydrocortisone on the spots that itch, too. And try to be diligent about washing your hands after petting the puppy.
I have 4 cats and found out last year that I'm allergic to them! I guess that explained all the sneezing and eye irritation. I got the generic Zyrtec from Costo: www.costco.com/Kirkland-Signature%E2%84%A2-Aller-Tec%E2%84%A2,-365-Tablets.product.11312465.html I take one each night before bed and it has helped a lot. I also have prescription strength eye drops I use when I need them.
That's exactly how I react to all pets. I take allergy meds every day, and while I can't guarantee that it will happen for you, I always get more tolerant of my own pets over time.
