My dear friends got their very sweet pit from PAWS - she had to be given up by her previous family because of money woes. They got the impression that many dogs (and cats) there were very well cared for, well trained dogs whose owners reluctantly gave them up. But PAWS does full interviews and screening of all potential adoptive families, plus home visits. In case that helps put your friend's mind at ease a little. I'm sorry he's going through this, too

Are they fostered in a home or is it a shelter?
The break up situation sucks but honestly it is for the best. This chick has zero personality and has been mooching off of him for 4 years as she waits tables part time (despite having a BA and certified pharmacy technician).
Their poor dog is a sweetheart but they never put the time into training/exercising her.
It's mainly a shelter, but they do foster out pets in temporary homes, so that they can house more animals in their system - they're pretty popular, so fostering lets them take in more animals than their facility can accommodate.
What a sad situation all around, but yeah, it does sound like your friend will be way better off in the future.

Is there any way he could keep the dog and hire a dog walker mid-day or something? My brother has a great dane and she is the laziest dog ever - they never ever walk or exercise her and she literally just sleeps all day and night. Great danes don't have a long lifespan (6-8 years) so it just seems extra cruel to get rid of the dog now.

Are you in Chicago? If it comes down to it I will let you know I hope that he will end up with the dog and will hire a dog walker since she is older for a GD (3 or 4 years old)
