I'm thinking about going for it. I've just started logging in my project management hours and researching classes. I never realized how involved it was and, quite frankly, find it extremely overwhelming.
Any words of encouragement from people who have been through it? :?
I have my PMP certification, feel free to ask any questions!
It is hard and takes a lot of work and studying but I think the professional payoffs are well worth it.
If you can afford it, I would HIGHLY recommend taking a PMP class. There are some that are over a few weeks and one that is over an entire weekend. They are expensive but they also usually "guarantee you pass" or you'll get your money back. I studied by myself and even with my extensive real-life PM experience I barely passed. I think I could have been much better prepared if I took a class.

Are you a PMI member? Do they provide those classes? I was thinking of doing prep classes through a local university but this seems to be a better choice

Yes, I am a member. I am not aware of PMI classes; they offer access to a lot of PMP type publications and articles that might help with the test. All of those that I know who have taken a PMP class either did it at a local university or through a 3rd party.
I'm just starting to log my hours (on a spreadsheet, not ready for the application process yet) so when I am in a good place I will sign up for courses.
This seems like it will be gruelling but worth it in the end
Chances are the local community college offers the class, most of them do.
Now that I've passed the exam, I get emails offering PMP classes all the time. It's weird. Next time I get one I will PM you the organizations name; I can't think of it off hand right now.
I have a spreadsheet that I made for the PMP course that is just like the one you will be filling out with PMI. I'm happy to send it to you if you want. It will make the actual process of signing up much easier.

"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
The PMI books are good, and if you get a professional certificate at any point (not PMP) they will most likely use the same texts. I am not a PMP but have coordinated most prep courses leading to the PMP process. It is difficult, but worth it. Check out universities that might have an extension department, or try for any tech or community colleges. They will most likely have a PMP prep course - 8 hours or so.
