I have all the books I could need, and what more could I need than books? I shall only engage in commerce if books are the coin. -- Catherynne M. Valente
I would go as generic as possible. I got a gc to Cold Stone Creamery 5 years ago that I was finally able to use a few weeks ago. I would eventually use a Starbucks or BBW card, but I would have to go out of my way to do so. I much prefer to get a Visa gc that I can use whenever the mood strikes me on whatever I want.

For teenagers I get iTunes gift cards. For older cousins I get Starbucks or movie gift cards. For adult relatives I get Starbucks gift packages and a pound of Christmas Blend, which they love.

I give cash to my nieces and nephews, but it's usually paper money folded into some origami thing or another. Never just straight-up money, but I think this year I'm going to start with plain old checks. My bils and sils and I all have two kids each, so it's like we just hand off each other $100 per pair, and I'm kind of sick of trying to be creative about it. I'm also a little upset with my il's at the moment, so this may change when we get closer to the holiday. For me, I'll happily accept any gift card, and will appreciate the thought that went into picking the seller. Stuff, for the sake of having a gift to wrap, or unwrap, will be just as likely to be regifted or donated as used.
Cash, but that will never happen, so gift cards, but they rarely happen, because my BIL raises such a stink about how gift cards require no thought and are impersonal and blah blah that no one buys them for anyone anymore. It's annoying, but I guess ultimately not really that big of a deal - I'm just lazy and prefer shopping for myself instead of trying to figure out specific things I want, lol. I change my mind too much to really say "I love these five things, here's my list".

I hate Starbucks, Bath and Body Works, and the movies; don't shop at B&N; and don't really buy things on iTunes, so... But also, those are kind of generic ones that require no thought and you give to your kids' teachers or whatever because you don't know them. I like giving/receiving gifts that require thought.
I would enjoy a gift card to a store I actually frequent, I guess, although it makes me sad when everyone just gives everyone gift cards because then you might as well just all put $20 bills in a big pile and each take a different one out.

That's exactly how I feel. Really if I want something, I'll just go and buy it, I don't need your cash for that. What i want is a little something fun that you picked just for me.
