and the skin has completely engulfed it.
it actually happened to both ears, though the left one was still peeking out of the skin and I was able to force it out.
you guys...what the fuck?
he told me about this last night right before bed and refused to let me touch it until today.
he said his right ear has been bothering him for about a week, but he never said a word to me about it. he didn't even know it was happening to the left one.
his doctor couldn't get him in today and said that i could just bring him in tomorrow. i am very confident in his doctor and trust that it will be alright, and know the signs of infection that would mean we head to the ER, but I am so uneasy about this.

It sounds like he is a quick healer (totes a medical term).
When I got my ears pierced as a kid (THREE TIMES) my earlobe closed in around the post every time. So one morning I would wake up and try to diligently twist the posts the way I was taught, and the fuckers wouldn't budge.
that happened to me when my ears had been pierced for maybe a year (I think I was 8). It got infected and I did a shitty job taking care of it, and that was the end result. My dad fished it out with a sewing needle, which was about as much fun for both of us as you'd expect.
Weirdly, it healed fine and I didn't even have to have it re-pierced.
I don't understand it either. This happened to Abby maybe 6 months after I had her ears pierced. I felt so horrible! I didn't notice it and at the time we were keeping earrings in overnight so the holes would not close up. I was able to weasel it out of her ear and since then I only use those gummy back earrings on her. He'll be OK. I hope they can get it out with minimal discomfort.

Iv had this happen a few times with various piercings. Warm salt water and diluted tea tree oil are both great for bringing down the swelling and preventing infection . I know you've already got the doctor on it, but if you're anxious to do something tonight, that's what has worked for me.

When I had my cartilage pierced at age 13 this happened because the ear was so swollen from the trauma. I went to the doctor and he said if I'd waited another day I would have had to go to the hospital for IV antibiotics. I also had to soak my ear in hydrogen peroxide for a month and ended up bleaching that entire patch of hair, ha. Anyway, if it looks swollen, red, or feels warm, get him to the doc ASAP.

also, its been pierced for over a year. he used to wear hoops but decided he'd like studs instead. i guess he was afraid the backs would fall off and pushed them too tight.
and there is no possible way for me to get the right one out on my own. his pedi is going to have to cut him or send us to a surgeon to get it out. its a bit puffy and red, but no heat or drainage.
and thanks to E, as always, we are almost at our oop max for the year. so if surgery is required, it shouldn't hurt the wallet too much.

This happened to me, except it was the ball in the front, not the back that got lodged. It was fine the night before, and my mom noticed the next day it was gone. She thought it fell out, but the back was still there. It didn't have time to get infected. I think the anticipation of my mother getting it out was worse than the actual procedure.
This happened to me 3 times. Only it wasn't the back it was the front. & back, like totally engulfed. Anyways once my mom managed to get it out somehow. The other 2 times it was cut out by the Dr. It sucked. I still don't have my ears pierced.
