DH and I are trying to decide what to do for thanksgiving. We live in the burbs of Boston and usually host or go to my moms house in RI. This year they are all going to my sisters house in NYC. We don't spend Thanksgiving with DH's family. I don't want to cook for just the two of us. We are considering the following options.
1. Order dinner from Whole Foods and heat it up at home with the two of us. 2. Go out to dinner in downtown Boston somewhere. 3. Drive to Newport RI and go out to dinner there.
Do you know any friends that also don't have plans? An "orphans" Thanksgiving sounds pretty fun.
Most of our friends are gone or have plans with family. One friend did invite is to her parents house with her but I think I would rather not since we don't know them. I wish more of our friends had no plans I would love to host a bunch of friends. I love the cooking of turkey day but it sounds depressing to do it for just the two of us.

I made thanksgiving a few years ago for me and H and it was the best! I loved that it was just the two of us. We went the whole foods route and it was excellent so that is my vote.

I'd probably go out to eat. We used to do this when my sister and I were kids because both grandmothers had food allergies and it was hard to accommodate everyone.

I had a hunch the WF would be awesome.
I missed Thanksgiving with my family once, and while I've always thought it would be cool to go out to dinner, I have to admit I missed leftovers. For that reason, I'd strongly consider the WF option.
But really, you can't go wrong!!! If you end up going out, since it's really not a terrible drive, I vote for Newport. How romantic! And you probably go out in Boston a fair amount, right? Why not mix it up when you have some time to spare?
I would either make only my favorite dishes or go out. Sometimes in the month of November I do focus on making my fave Tday dishes so I can really enjoy them instead of feeling like I have to overindulge on the actual day.
I worked once at an upscale steakhouse that served an awesome Thanksgiving Buffet, it was packed for 9 hrs straight at about $47pp (tips were awesome) but this place in MA looks similar...
Some of those do look pretty good! Pilsy has a good point about leftovers but cooking sounds exhausting with my work schedule. I am going to expand my search to the more thanksgiving- ey places in the burbs like that gibbet hill place too.
preppy - We have MIL with us for Thanksgiving and are going out for dinner. We are thinking Top of the Hub but are still looking at other options. So might see you out that night!
I also want to point out that although we go to local family now that day, we also make a thanksgiving meal another weekend with food we like/would serve just for the two of us. It isn't depressing and pretty easy just for two! You could make a small turkey or just the breast.
The WF thanksgiving is pretty great - I've done it once before. We are doing it again this year bc we'll be only home from the hospital with DC2 for like a week - so our plans is to have immediate fam here with the full WF package. Last year my parents went up to Harts Turkey Farm if you want to take a little drive to a place that specializes in turkey instead of picking a random resto in Boston. It's maybe a 2 hour drive, pretty though near winnepesauki.

I would do option 1. I haven't had WF Thanksgiving, but in the UK we do Christmas food from a similarly high-end supermarket, and it's delicious. It does not taste like sad reheated food, it tastes like delicious gourmet food that you just had to put in the oven without having to do anything else.

DH's task for today is to make our reservation. I'll let you know where we decide to go!
I find myself in the same situation and thought I would order from Whole Foods. Now, I'm reconsidering and think the restaurant is the best way to go. I wouldn't go farther than Boston, if I had to work the next day.
