Question: is it expensive to get a new starter installed? My truck is dead--I figured it needs a new battery. Now the mechanic is working on an estimate for a starter.

You can buy one at auto parts stores. I'd price them out there and see if your mechanic will price match, or if you can bring one in from the auto parts store and have him install.
Ram's aren't too terribly bad to replace, it should be a relatively easy fix. It's something that if you had someone who knows their way around cars, could fix. Or just take it in and keep an eye on how much they charge for labor.
I've replaced starters, I also have a 2003 Dodge 1500. It's an easy job, 1-2 hours + ~$100 in parts / materials. They get a far cheaper price on the part.
Thanks, ladies. It's weird: I was thinking the other day how nice it was not having car problems, then BAM! To be fair, it is time for its 90K mile check-up.

Not terribly. I know this because the one on my parents car died when I was out there a few years ago. Not super cheap, but manageable. Less than $200 start to finish, including labor.
