I don't understand all the common core hate. I'm not even claiming to completely understand it myself. Funny story about common core:
H had a short interview with the superintendent for another position with the school board he works for. After the interview, the superintendent called H's department head and asked to have H do a presentation on common core. Apparently, he has a better grasp of it than even she does.

I don't get the CC hate. I get all the standardize testing hate, but not the CC hate. what's so wrong with teaching critical thinking skills
I like common core. Jackson is doing algebra in 1st grade. Granted, it's simple, but it makes sense in conjunction with what they are doing (addition/subtraction).
I do think, however, it will be a rough adjustment for everyone who didn't start out with it - kids, parents, teachers.
Hell no. You don't get to skip school in my house unless you're sick. Stay home? Nope. *says the lady who stayed home from work today*
Do you have a massive sinus/pressure head ache?
I do. I've never wanted a line of tornadoes to come through so much just so I can be done with the pain
No. I'm just tired. September was a month where every single weekend we had some event to attend. Then, October has been busy at the office, plus I spent every Tues and Wed at church for choir rehearsal. Then this weekend, was T's birthday party. Last night, we had a input group meeting at work (from 5:30pm-7pm). I'm tired, and I just didn't have any energy to go to the office today.
I plan on watching Wendy Williams at 10am, then taking a nap.

my crazycakes neighbors want to get rid of CC. because educating in a vacum is so much better.
oh, and the best part? when i asked why they thought this was even a possibility one of them said, "well, they're doing it in florida." when i replied "yes, but i pay a shitton of taxes to NOT live in florida" i got the "aren't you special" look.

WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING???
Look, Florida is a hot mess. I live here, I should know but seriously, this a reason to hate something? Because Florida is doing it? Your crazycakes neighbors might have benefited from a CC curriculum.
OH and the conservatives don't like it because states rights and creationism.
I'm a huge fan of federal education standards; states ::cough:: Texas ::cough:: screw up education too much. Federalization of education standards, etc. is a good thing in my book.
I'm going to have to talk to H some more to refresh my memory but I thought because the testing component was messed up, that states were allowed to create their own?
I didn't think Common Core dictated content. Is that not correct?
I'm not sure but I think this is right. I think people are resisting it on the states rights side because it is a federal standard? The standards are the same nationwide I think.
And I really like the standards based grading and curriculum from what I've seen. The rubric we got explaining their grades made a lot of sense and gives me a really good idea of how Jackson is doing vs just an A.

But the history of it is a group of states got together and set the standards, not the fed gov't telling states to adopt the standards or lose funding (like the fed's trying to raise the drinking age to 21 by withholding fed transportation dollars)

I really think Common Core will be a better thing for kids and teachers coming into the system but a source of frustration for those already in it. But you have to start somewhere.

i felt bad thinking that because you live there but that's immediately where i went.
i am still bitter that you get to go ToTing when it's warm out, though.

I don't hate common core yet. It's a lot of work for teachers and I have no idea about the testing b/c my oldest is only a second grader (state testing starts in 3rd), but I honestly don't think it's the evil demon. My kid had a worksheet that used the geometry term "proof" and when I asked him what a "proof" was he said, "you have to prove that you know it by using the rules of math and numbers." Um, yeah! That's years above where I was, which I'm not sure is perfect, but it's pretty cool.

I could be wrong, but it's not a Federal Initiative (based on the webinar I attended last year - I could be foggy on this). My understanding is that this is really a state-driven initiative. The states themselves decided to be a part of it. It's not a Federal Gov't mandate. Isn't that correct tef
According to my tea party daycare provider, my kid is going to start doing crazy math, and the government is going to collect my income and religious preference thanks to CC. Also, in 2nd grade they will be expected to correctly identify all the body parts, including genitalia, and understand the reproductive system.

Your DCP totally has a point. Personally, I hate when those educator freaks try to teach my kid math and science.

Does your kid get a healthy dose of tea with their circle-time and diaper changes? Does she call a kid's vagina a teetee or something when a kid gets hurt?

LOL. She's actually a really fantastic provider. She doesn't believe it's her business to indoctrinate our children so it works out well. I just try really hard to never talk politics with her or I just smile and nod when she spouts these things off to me.
