my nephews were still obsessed with Lego at age 9 and were really getting into the more complicated sets. they can be pricey though depending on your budget.
One of my nephews just turned 9. He's way into Lego, specifically the Chima and Minecraft sets. He's also way into Skylanders but those are tied to a specific video game. He also likes video games like Little Big Planet (a sequel just came out), and any of the Lego video games. Lego Marvel Superheroes is the newest one and he loves it.
He also got a few non-Lego gifts that seemed cool. These are the ones I can remember:
Thames & Kosmos Rocket Science kit Fractiles 7 magnetic set Red Toolbox woodworking kit
ETA: We cross-posted. Lego Minecraft will be awesome!

We are just seeing Minecraft stuff pop up in stores (including Minecraft lego) which makes me LOL b/c all minecraft is - is building with squares/cubes - so any basic lego set automatically to me = minecraft...
Minecraft is an obsession at this age definitely.
I think the nerf toys/ over the door basket ball, glow in the dark basketball/footballs are big too
