We are having a scaled back birthday party for E this year and just doing a back yard thing with family and a few friends with cake and snacks. So I am throwing out my go fly a kite theme which I was all ready to roll with (boooo) but still want to do a color theme for some small decorations. I either want to do orange and pink (orange is Ella's favorite color) or rainbow (I want to make one of those rainbow cakes!). Is a rainbow themed party for the gay family too "gay"? I could also do a orange to pink ombre cake similar to the rainbow cake. Thoughts?? Oh and has anyone made one of these cakes? I am a good baker so I think I can do it but would love any hints or recipes. Blue come in here, I need your help!
I think the pink and orange would be super cute - and pay homage to E's favorite color. I love the rainbow cakes, but do think they are rather gay/Pride seeming.
I'd go pink and orange (like your siggy! which is so stinking cute!!). And I like the idea of doing the same technique as the rainbow cake, just in pink and orange layers. I've never tried the rainbow cake but have heard its not too hard, esp if you bake a lot.
The rainbow cake is really easy if you want to go that route. We thought about doing the rainbow theme for Ava's birthday but decided it would come off as too gay... Boo.

Honestly I don't see anything wrong with the rainbow cake. We have friends that do it every year for their daughter's birthday and it's never come across as "too gay" to me.
That said, I think the pink and orange theme would be super cute too, and I would think you could do the same thing pretty easily with just two alternating colors and that would be really cool. I'd make a practice one first if you can but I wouldn't stress about it, they're pretty easy to make.
