We are redoing dining room. We've picked a wallpaper (never ever thought I'd do paper) which we love. Its a big, funky yellow and white design which I'll post if I can find.
We went over budget, so I'm hoping to recoup costs with cheap bookshelves. I need a pair of open/no back bookcases. They will go on each side of my piano (medium brown wood). We can do either a glossy white or a gold/brass finish for the bookcases.
Ideally, I'd love to snatch up cool vintage faux bamboo or delicate brass and glass etagere. I'm not finding it in my price range. I did find wood shelves with potential at a secondhand store, would paint white. See pic. They are open back, hard to tell. $445 for the pair, plus pro paint job bc I suck at painting.
Or I could do this ikea hack below for super cheap, to go for the gold etagere look. $150 for the pair plus shipping plus paint job.

I would wonder about shipping costs (you're talking shipping from Ikea right? Because that's insanely priced) and paint costs. I would hold off until you find something in your range. And honestly, spray painting that metal frame on that Ikea shelf wouldn't be hard. Just get the attachment for the spray paint can that looks like a trigger and practice on something beforehand. It's not that hard.
Emo, maybe I could do it. I've also been reading gold leaf tutorials. We do have a husband and wife company in STL that makes monthly runs to Ikea in Chicago with a huge truck for cheaper than Ikea shipping, if we go that route.

I know I looked into a couch and I'm in the same boat you are re: shipping because it's a LONG drive to Ikea (8 hours to Texas, 8 to Colorado or 8 hours to Chicago -- We need one in the KC or STL area!) and the cost of the couch was cheaper than shipping. I think they don't use outside shippers (i.e. FedEx or UPS) so that's why the prices are so insane.
I wonder if you could find a similar shape from Target or Wal-Mart that would be similarly priced without the insane shipping.
Essbee has a point though about the gold and the yellow clashing. Can you see if you can find a yellow room with gold furnishings to see how it would look?
