My school scheduled a trip to the zoo. Everyone from grades k-3 are going. Last year we (just K) went to the zoo in May and it was awesome, WHY they scheduled a 6 hour, outdoor field trip for mid November, I have no idea.
The weather outlook for the day we're going just gets worse and worse. Right now it will be windy and 44 degrees as the high. Would you even send your kid?
I can't speak as a parent but I know that the kids at school don't find temperatures to be cold the same way we do...especially not that young...by grade 8 they start wanting to stay in at about -10 (so like 20F?) but in general, the little ones? They are happy to go out and run around so 44F is probably fine.
I remember going to the zoo in grade 3 or 4 on an unseasonably cold April or May day. It was something like in the 30s and raining. I was still so jazzed to go and didn't mind at all. We had umbrellas.
I don't have kids, but I don't think 44 is that bad.

Our zoo? IS AWESOME in the cold. I love it. There's plenty of things to do indoors, and the animals are more active. We go twice as often in the winter-snowy days are the BEST!
I'm from Boston, the schools here can't bring kids out to recess if it's below 32 degrees Where are you? You mentioned 44 as the high. It'll likely be lower. I'm not sure. If my child was all super pumped about going I'd bundle she shit out of them and give the teacher tissues for the inevitable nose run, and say have fun. If my child didn't really care, I may be inclined to see if there was an alternative. Any time any of my kids had field trips there was always a place in the school for the kids who, for one reason or another, weren't going on the field trip so it wasn't a matter of having to stay home with them if they didn't go. They still went to school, just not the field trip, see.
I'm super anxious so I never allowed my kids to attend field trips while still at the car seat/booster seat age. (Preschool etc) I'm not trusting someone else to properly use the car seat (I know they aren't hard but there is room for error so I'm all set)

Tough call Good luck
Really? No recess if it's bellow 32!?
I'm from Michigan - so it can get super cold! I remember it had to be in the single digits or bellow zero for no recess! Or a nasty wind chill.
For the OP, I would make sure everyone is bundled really well. The one thing I like about the cold is you can wear layers and take off what you don't need when you're too warm and put it back on if you're cold again.
Me? I might keep her home, but my kid never keeps her coat on and a high of 44 would be incredibly cold around here (that's a midwinter low temp). Our zoo is in a windy location and is all outside. The zoo animals would probably hide in their enclosures. Our high tomorrow is 69.
I'd send my kid all bundled up appropriately and let her have fun. DH and I actually did a zoo day on a similar temp day and it was fine (we were OOT and had time to kill before hotel check in). We bundled up and enjoyed ourselves it really wasn't that bad. Plus Kids don't notice the cold the same way adults do and with the excitement of the animals it'll be fine.

Really?! I'm south of Boston and my son's school said dress weather appropriately because they have recess outside unless it's a)pouring or b) the windchill recommends staying indoors.
Of course! But our zoo is open in the winter and we always go in December or January. They have fire pits outside and you can drink hot chocolate to warm up. But I like winter!
