We do photo cards of just us. Usually we use a vacation photo. I love photo cards and I don't feel like I can't send them just because I don't have kids. We only send to our closest friends and family, who I know like to get them.
Before DD I usually sent xmas themed pics of our basset. Also one year I sent a cute one of us on vacation in the snow (we live in FL, so that's a big deal)...
I like when a couple send a gorgeous landscape from a vacation that year. Always nice to see new places...

Well last year I did put the dog playing in the snow on our card. I don't know if I'll do that again or not.
We have a pretty small list, maybe 30 or 40 households? So I just try to write a short personal message in each one (something like, "We can't wait to see you on Christmas!" or "Hope your new job is going well!") and call it a day.

I do cards with Walter on them. Two years ago I did "Walter's Holiday Cocktail Tips" with a picture of him shaking off snow and then another picture of him smiling and there was a recipe for a Christmas cocktail on the back:
Last year I did a picture of him looking majestic in a river and included a quote:
I always do a personal note in/on every card, whether it's photo or not. I've done a couple of photo ones -- when we got engaged, and a few years ago when I had a hilarious santa pic of my dog to AW. I could AW my new dogs this year, but I will probably just send old-fashioned ones without photos.

The year we got married, we took all those photos from the disposable cameras at the wedding and put them in the cards (pic of Aunt Mary's kids in Aunt Mary's card, etc). I figured people liked to get pics of themselves more than of us, and it was a good way to get rid of a bazillion prints.

Not all cards have to be photo cards. I love picking out gorgeous holiday cards. One year I did really pretty letterpress, but there are lots of lovely cards to choose from.
I actually prefer those to most photo cards. I'm a stationery dork like that. Plus, cards that fold/stand are easier to display, not like cheap photo paper.

I send a nice-quality card with a very *very* short note. This year, we might divide personal contacts from business contacts and send a picture to the personal ones.
I used to go to the paper source or some such similar store and pick out the box of cards that made me laugh the most. One year the front was a 1940s era photo of a kid licking a flag pole with "hathy holthithays" on the inside. Still cracks me up.
When are you due? If you haven't done Christmas cards in the past, you could wait and just send birth announcements.
(We didn't start doing cards until we had the kid. I'm lazy like that.)
Just found out this week so not due until July. Christmas is only the 12 week point so I don't want to announce in a card either because that just feels too early.
I always send cards, but never pictures. I sent out a recipe two years ago (LHC's Ginger Molasses Cookies), the year before that we handmade paper reindeer ornaments and I designed an "official document" that accompanied them. I love seeing these things at people's homes (and my old workplace!). And both things were well received. If I had a billion dollars (read like an extra hundred) I would order stickygram magnets for everyone's cards this year.
This year will be our first photo cards. Freddie Spaghetti's photo shoot is tomorrow and I'm totally over thinking it.

I've sent out picture cards every year. Before we had kids I used a collage of pictures from that year - vacation pics, random funny pics etc. I like getting any cards. It's fun to get real mail, it's one of my favorite things about Christmas. I don't care if you don't have kids, I like to see peoples pictures.
Our cards have a picture of us. I don't mind family picture Xmas cards, but hate when it's only the kids. The only reason I know the kids is because of the parents, and I like seeing them too.
