I adopted her with my first live-in boyfriend. She had been in the shelter for 6 months and was too shy to stay around when people came looking for a cat. We spent an hour on a bench and she came and cuddled with us. The shelter worker told us we were not allowed to adopt anyone, but her. She was a polydactyl torty.
When my male cat died this March she was really sad. She has been struggling with ear infections, due to a polyp we couldn't have removed due to her age and a heart murmur. Today, she refused to eat, and started to stumble, and ultimately couldn't stand. She will be missed.
I am so sorry. We put our 18 year-old cat down last week. She was born in our garage, her feral mother abandoned her and we kept her. She was a very odd kitty, she didn't meow for several years but instead warbled like a bird. She didn't have a mother cat to teach her and she would hear birds outside. She didn't like anyone but me, I was the only one that could pick her up or even pet her very much.
We knew it was coming but just like your kitty, within a couple of hours she just went in to a total decline of not being able to stand. Even though we knew it was coming it hit so much harder than I thought.
Thanks everyone. @applesauce, her name was Tilly. I called her that, but when she was little she would sleep in the sun, so I also called her Matilda Sunshine Cat. It is where my screen name comes from. moolarkey, I am sorry for your loss also.
