I have been googling an there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Anyone here have experience and advice? My poor pup has a pretty raw one on his hip.
I have been putting ointment on it, bathing once a week in oatmeal and and considering getting one of those alien collars for him.

We took my dog to the vet last month because she had one and they gave her anti-biotics and a numbing spray. It helped a lot and it's completely fine now.
But previous dogs, whenever they've had hot spots we've taken them to the vet to have them "scraped". Once that was done, they usually cleared right up with ointment.

We use antibacterial cream and put on the Elizabethan collar (which we call his helmet) for a few days. Always works. Basically you need to get your dog to stop licking and treat any infection that might be there (if it's just red, nothing much is needed other than to dry it out - I use Gold Bond powder on it). If it is oozing anything or white, then I use the cream I got from my vet for a two days or until the ick is gone and then dry it out with the powder.

My dog has been getting them from his seasonal allergies. I took him to the vet and they put him on a course of antibiotics and steroids.
Now for maintenance I bathe him weekly with medicated shampoo from the vet, I wipe down his paws and legs and snout everytime he comes in from the outside, he is on a daily antihistamine and I put a tablespoon of local honey in with his food every morning. My dog is kind of a diva.
Our dog got a pretty good size one over the summer - we put apple cider vinegar on it. Cleared up within the day and you can't even tell it was there anymore.

Wyatt gets one above his tail about once a year - I try like hell to make him wear that huge cone & put cream on it, but he wants no part of it. I end up taking him to the vet where they scrape it and then give him a shot of antibiotics/steroids.

That is interesting. I had heard about putting a little apple cider vinegar in a dog's water dish to help their skin. I'm going to research this more. Thanks for the idea!

My dog got one right around the base of his tail last year and when I took him in they said his anal glands had become impacted. So the hotspot was a result of him scooting and chewing at his tail (which I hadn't seen him doing). So they expressed them and then did a course of antibiotics and steroids.

Do we have the same dog? Mine is a diva too. Poor guy.
We do daily antihistamine as soon as the weather turns warm. I try and wipe him down when he has been outside. He gets a medicated bath often. I am suppose to do it every other day. I normally get once a week if I'm lucky.
Last summer we were on antibiotics and steroids all summer long. Simon is allergic to chicken so we had to figure that out and once we did we just were left with the pollen/grass allergy which we just deal with using the above methods.

Thankfully my dog has been responding to all my actions because the next course was to find out if he had a food allergy.
I also had the groomer give my dog the worst haircut you have ever seen. He is a golden and his areas that he had issues with were his legs and the back of his head. So I had the groomer just shave his legs and the back of his head and trim the rest of his hair. He looks absolutely ridiculous, but the less hair the less opportunity for pollen and other items to stick to him.

I took ours to the vet both times because they looked so bad and sore. They gave me a spray and put her on antibiotics. She also wore a cone, so she would stop licking or scratching at it.

Yeah we did everything under the sun. He was so so sick and since we had spent months spending one night a week at the vet and all sorts of money the vet finally decided to play with his food. It is amazing how much it helped. Simon is a miniature dachshund so he is really low to the ground so there isn't much I can do about the pollen sticking to him but wipe him down.
