The shampoo is fine as long as he conditions afterward. They actually have decent black hair care products at regular stores now so any of them should be fine. You can get some claw clips to hold the extra hair to the side.
This sounds silly, but check out the AA children's hair products. There are some good twisting and braiding creams available. The shea moisture line is a good start. Coconut oil works well too. I'm being serious here. Good luck!

I agree with the PPs. Get products that don't have mineral oil or petroleum oil in it. It will just get caked up in his hair. Shea Moisture and Taliah Waajid have good products for kids.
As far as shampoos, I would avoid anything with sulfate because it can be too harsh on his hair.
Instead of using bobby pins, you could probably use the elastic bands with the cotton material over it so the hair won't snag.
