Could you help me? I am having trouble keeping my fasting numbers in range. I am just slightly above where I'm supposed to be. I am working with a diabetes team by phone, and they are zero help. They just keep telling me what the carb range for bedtime snack is, and asking if I've tried a piece of fruit. They also keep telling me that they are concerned I'm not getting enough carbs, but that I must be having too many carbs. So...... Did certain snacks help you? Is there something I should aim for (ie higher fat, more fiber). Do you know what things can cause the number to be too high? Did the timing of your snack matter? Did you need insulin? I'm getting really frustrated here and would greatly appreciate any feedback.

I had it with both of mine. Peanut butter on whole grain toast or whole wheat crackers were my go to bedtime snacks, or I'd have half an orange. The way it was decribed to me, is that because you're going such a stretch without food while sleeping, your liver starts to store glucose for the organs that need it and desperses it throughout the night, causing high fasting numbers. By having whole grain carbs about an hour before bed (slow acting sugars), your liver doesn't need to store as much. It could also be that you need a bit of insulin at night to help you out. I needed it with my youngest (5 times a day, my sugars were out of control), and its not so bad. I'd talk to your OB and see what they suggest. Its frustrating as hell sometimes, but you'll get through it.
I would have a bowl of cereal for my snack at night before bed. It was the only time I was allowed milk through-out the day and even though I really didn't eat cereal prior to being pregnant, it was a major craving. Whole Grain Cheerios with 1% milk almost every night
How are the rest of your day numbers? If you have any questions, this board was very helpful when I had GD!

Thanks for the responses everyone! My number for the rest of the day are good, they are always a good deal below the top of the range. I am eating 6 times a day right now and have a range of carbs they gave me and have been sticking to that. 15-30g for snacks and 45-60g for lunch/supper although I have been high at 45g so I usually try to stay a bit under that. Generally my fasting number if 5.4 (97 for US) and they would like me at 5.3 (95 for US) or below. My other numbers throughout the day are always within range. I have only been at it for a few weeks but the Dr. said that he's happy with my numbers and they look fine. However I talk to our diabetes group at the hospital every few days and she is not happy with my numbers and has said I might "spiral out of control". I don't get a consistent message from her about what she'd like me to change though. She disagrees with the Dr. that I don't need intervention, but said it's his call to make. A few days I got 5.1 while eating popcorn the night before so I thought that might be a good one, but the results are hit and miss. I have been trying varying things and I am generally at 5.4 no matter what/when I ate the night before. Glad to hear that insulin isn't so bad if I need it. Sorry this is so long but I'm finding it really helpful to talk to others who have had it!
