We kept D home on Friday. We pay a week in advance so that Friday had already been paid for and we paid $65 for that day. She goes to daycare Monday and Friday one week and Wednesday the next week, and that alternates.
Anyway, I was confirming that the babysitter could still watch her tomorrow and she said yes, but we needed to bring the $40 for tomorrow at drop off. I was under the assumption that because this was drop in care that the money from Friday would apply to tomorrow. There was never a contract and this has never EVER been mentioned to me before.
And she only takes cash, which is super inconvenient.
So am I wrong? We've only ever used drop in care and we paid at pick up time each day. If D was sick we didn't pay for that day. Isn't that point in drop in care? You only pay for the days the kid is actually in care?
My daycare charged for drop in days even if you missed another day your kid would have been there. You are adding another kid to her day, IMO, so it seems fair. Unless I'm misunderstanding you!
I think that if the babysitter made the choice not to take her on Friday then she needs to give you a credit for that day. You wanted to drop her off, and the babysitter said no. If you flaked at the last min without a good reason, I would say you should still pay for the day but not in this case.

Even for drop in care?
Honestly, I am not trying to be difficult. We have used 3 different home providers through the 2 bases we've been at and none of them had this policy. We always paid for the day we used when we picked D up or at the end of the week.
Learn something new everyday lol.
This is the only one that we don't have a contract with as well and admittedly there have been a couple of things that have happened lately that may be coloring my view of this.

I texted her at 10am on Thursday to ask about Friday. D had had diarrhea once early that morning and that was it. I definitely did not call her Friday morning and let her know we wouldn't be there.
We do drop-in care & only pay for the days we actually take her. We did make it very clear from the get go, that we wouldn't pay if we don't bring her in.
