Ds plays with his cars and planes (from the Disney movies) a lot, and I just ordered some books for him from Scholastic books. He has legos and a little work bench he got for Xmas last year, but doesn't play with them a ton.
what should I get? (I should mention I go way overboard on Xmas because I grew up poor and was lucky to get sweater--so as much as I try to rein myself in, I'd like to find something DS would love)
lishie--DS would LOVE that table, but we just don't have the room for it. Or a train table. It would literally have to sit in the middle of some room (not his bedroom cuz its too small).
What board games could a 2.5 year old play? Candy Land?

DD loved her Little People sets especially the farm and school bus. She also loved her Magnadoodle and Aqua doodle. I also loved the Aqua Doodle because she loved painting and painting with water is a million times less messy than giving a 2.5 year old paint. She also loved her Imaginarium wooden block set from Toys R Us. She has Legos and Mega blocks, but it was a lot easier for her to build with the wooden blocks. She is 4.5 and still plays with the wooden block set.

DS is 2.5. I've put the Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game on DS's list, as well as Richard Scarry Busy Town. Those are both board games.
Also on his list: LeapFrog Letter Factory Phonics Fisher-Price Wheelies Loops 'n Swoops Amusement Park Melissa & Doug Sunny Patch Verdie Chameleon Watering Can Children's Toddler Golf Set Mudpuppy Construction Jumbo Puzzle Mudpuppy Construction Puzzle Wheel I SPY Animals book Magformers Rainbow 30 Piece Set Matchbox Cars with Carrying Case
We are getting DS1 some Thomas trains for his train table and a trunk full of dress up clothes (I stocked up after Halloween). He asked for a big fire truck from Santa. I will probably also get him some clothes, books and play food.

What about something like this? There are all sorts of DIY tutorials on Pinterest if you are handy.

I think you might want to consider a train table that slides under your cough. You can google several do-it-yourself versions of it.

We got our daughter a Melissa and Doug easel for her second birthday (seven months ago) and she still draws on it every day. Rarely do I take it outside for her to use paint; usually she uses crayon, marker, pencil, pen or the chalkboard side of it. She loves that thing.
She also has a tent which stores her stuffed animals and balls, and she goes in there most days too.
As for games, we just cracked a kids Memory game yesterday. She got the concept of finding matches, but not so much the turning back over of the cards (though most of our time playing with it was doing the initial assembly).
For stocking stuffer type stuff, I already got her a sticker book (companion to the Little Blue Truck, which she loves), and a tin of chapstick, there will probably be more stickers and M&Ms, etc.
My 2.5 yo girl is really into puzzles so she's getting some new ones. She's also getting one of those sticks with a horse head for pretend play. Santa is bringing a scooter.

At 2.5 (and now) L liked his play kitchen with pots/pans/oven/microwave thing, duplo blocks, he's crazy about any kind of mode of transportation, and his Little People barn.
Things we (and grandparents) want to get him for his bday and Christmas this year: a duplo table, tool set, some kind of track to drive his cars on, some kind of carrying case to put all his little cars into, and possibly more little people stuff.
