For a 7 p.m. party for 40 people, which would you prefer as a guest?
(A) Sit-down dinner with 10 small dishes, cash bar (B) Sit-down dinner with 10 small dishes, 1 pisco sour (C) Sit-down dinner with 10 small dishes, 2 glasses of red and/or white wine (D) 5 passed appetizers, 5 buffet items, open bar
Also, I like the passed/buffet option more because it allows me to talk to more people than a sit down dinner does.
This is my biggest reason for D. I used to organize a holiday dinner for a big group. Getting everyone to actually SIT DOWN was the hardest part of the dinner!

For me it's always about the bar. My husband asked me to choose what dinner I'd want for his office holiday party, and it said, "by the time I've had a few cocktails, I couldn't care less what I'm eating for dinner."

I'm probably I'm the minority but by 7 pm you'd better be finished with your dinner and ready to enjoy nibbles and booze.
I don't understand what this means.
For me, 7 pm is too late for dinner. It is, however, an excellent time to start drinking and enjoy some snacks. Or what you call "appetizers," which is confusing in this situation since appetizers are served before a meal.
ETA: Oops, reading fail. I overlooked that along with the open bar and apps there would be a small buffet. Sorry.
