Well, I got great swag once from winning a race, but it wasn't a prize, per se. The race sponsors gave every category winner the same swag (probably 150 people total, out of maybe 10,000 competitors).
It was Nautica (shut up. This was the early 2000's, when they probably saw the writing on the wall and were trying to drum up sales). A full fleece warm up suit, a duffel, and a really nice watch.
The swag I get at teacher conferences always sucks. Doesn't matter what it is; it's always the cheapest possible mug / pencil / frame / zip drive and I usually just toss it.

I like the blanket that's vinyl on one side and zips up into a bag-looking thing. I got it as a freebie from our concert venue salesman and I use it all the time for picnics and outdoor concerts.
I was at a conference last month and one vendor had a caricaturist which was kind of cool. Not the best swag, but unique. And it got people to stay at their booth for a while while the caricature was being drawn.
I gotten Ipods, those are always nice, good pens, I also like the climbing hook keychains, I also have one the of blankets that folds into a bag, and use it a lot too.
People went nuts one for these light-up bouncy balls i did. Oh and good quality tape measures. They also liked these little pads that held various sizes of post-its. But make sure you go for the real post-its.
What kind of conference or show or event is it? What "type" are you tying to attract or thank or whatever!
best swag I go for fancy pens, mini hard drives, usb ports, candy one of our partners has awesome hot sauce every year at their booth I make sure to stock up

I got a messenger bag/briefcase at a conference. Awesome and useful for carrying everyone else's swag/junk home on the plane. I still use it, in fact.
ETA: I have also gotten a number of water bottles and love them. I take them to races/swim practice/the gym and I don't feel guilty if I lose or break them since they were free.
Otherwise, I like edibles. Cookies with the company's logo in edible ink have been a hit with me. LOL
My company does Swag if you ever need help ordering something specific with your logo for shows @looneylunalovegood
Been in this biz for 12years!
Favorites are usually EcoFriendly/Reusuable Bags, High capacity USB Drives (This is important because people will throw away the small storage space drives), Mints/Candy, Reusable water bottles, Tumblers, Stylus for your Ipad, Tile Coasters (One of those things that people actually keep and use in their offices), post it pads, insultated bags/coolers, playing cards.
Oh ya, and our 2 big sellers last year were stainless steel travel coffee mugs & a Pen that also doubled as a flash drive. The end of the pen came off and there was the drive. I have a shitload of these at my office. They're pretty cool.

I know a company "famous" for their swag spice mix. A friend worked there and was forever giving us some.
A friend booked will & Kate impersonators for a conference, and people loved it. It was right after George was born do they stood their with baby as a photo op. everyone got a picture at the booth and would tweet/IG it right away.
I went to a med publishing conference once that gave kindles with preloaded reference books. I gave it to my fellow though. Ain't nobody reading all that.
