Hahaha. Ok, so when he was about 18 his mom told him that if he got a perm she would give him $500. Apparently when she first met FIL, he had a tight perm and she said "it was so beauuutiful!" So he was like, fuck yeah, $500! Because, beer money. And he did. But she wouldn't give him the $500 because it was all a scam, so he washed it out and was left with a mess of stringy, half curly, half fried hair. It was awful and hilarious. There's no pic, and if there was he would probably kill me if I put it up.

I have, this past March. I got a beach wave perm, which is less tight/kinky, and more wavy.
I think my hair wasn't healthy enough to get the perm, maybe? I thought the stylist would cut more off the unhealthy ends to start with, before setting the perm, than she did. So the ends were wavy, but also kind of unhealthy-looking. Overall, I liked the waves, but my hair also looked thinner - it didn't give me the body that I'd hoped it would. Plus, you have to dry it a certain way and put stuff in it - it was more maintenance than I was used to (which, before the perm, was none at all). The perm lasted about six months, though, which was nice. I just cut my hair the other day, and it's straight-ish again (I had some wave already, before getting permed), and way healthier.
Could you try playing up the waves that you already have, instead of perming it? Try using some Deva Curl or Curly Sexy Hair products, and scrunch it dry with an old t-shirt after you shower.
wannabe got a digital perm and it looked amazing. It made me want one, but I got like 5 perms in the early 90s and none of them lasted longer than a week. My hair hates curl!
I had perms on a regular basis for years. Then it started to take a toll on my poor hair. I began to fear that I'd be one of those bald little old ladies, so I finally embraced my straight-as-string hair and took up with flat ironing. That was almost five years ago and my hair is absolutely healthy and happy.

I do this, but one side of my hair is much curlier than the other and I hate that I can't get somewhat consistent waves throughout my hair. I was hoping a perm could fix that.

I haven't had one since the late 80s, but I saw my hairdresser do one last year and it looked great. I suppose it depends on who does it and what kind.

I will be the odd (wo)man out and say I got one about a year ago and loved it. It was so easy and I thought it looked great!
However, I had an AMAZING stylist who I knew would do a great job and had discussed it with her during several appointments before getting it done. She actually used bendy rollers rather than the traditional spiral rollers and I really did get a beachy wave look.
The only problem I have with it is that it really has lasted about a year. I got it the week of Thanksgiving last year. I definitely still have perm in my hair. I have been getting regular cuts which has seemed to keep it bouncy, but you are really starting to see in my roots now and I probably need to cut some of it off.
I don't know how to PIP or else I would show a pic.
Ok, I actually I think I figured ou how to upload a picture. We will see if it works.
The first picture was right after it was done. She dried it with a diffuser, which I did not do during daily styling, and I feel like that made it a bit fluffier than it normally was.
The second picture is more how I styled it from day to day.
Maybe you all will think it looks bad, but I liked it.
I might DD the pictures after a bit. Please don't quote!
I think a perm lasting a year is getting quite a lot out of it. Of course the roots aren't going to grow in curly; that hair hasn't been treated.
Anyway. I haven't had a perm since 8th grade. I'm not sure if the process has changed at all, but I remember it being smelly and gross, and that I was never happy with how it turned out. There's no way I would get a traditional perm again.

I should clarify that I meant I wish it would have gone away by now. Thestylist said about 3 months, give or take, so I definitely wasn't expecting to still have perm a year later.
I got one at Hair Cuttery in college, maybe 12 years ago? I loved it. I got so many compliments and when I look back at pictures I really like how it looked. I inspired friends to do the same thing, lol. It lasted basically until it grew out, although I guess the curls weren't as tight after a while. I've thought about doing it again, but I don't want to spend the money on it.

I have quite a bit of wave and just asked my stylist to cut my hair to bring the curl out more. With the right product and scrunching it, I can pretty much wash and go now. I use Moroccan Curl Cream.

That makes way more sense!!
If it's any consolation, I think it looks nice. Natural and not perm-y.

I asked a girl with gorgeous curls how she got her hair that way. It was a perm and she recommended her stylist. I went to him (aveda salon). I got FRIZZ. He gave me two deep conditioning treatments and then he cut it to shoulder length to get rid of the damage (my hair was at least to the middle of my back.)
I still wish it had worked though because her curls were gorgeous.
