We were talking about this last night when we were walking the dog, and I am curious.
I have always called them fireflys, but my H was confused by this, he has always called them lightning bugs.

Weirdo. I've always called 'em lightnin' bugs.
I was talking to D the other day about how it was saddening that we don't see them anymore

I should have voted SS: growing up we called them fireflies, but after living in the south for years, I now call them lightning bugs.

My H and I are at odds about this. I say fireflies. He says the other, wrong thing.

I voted SS because I use both equally... I only ever see them on visits to the Midwest when I see family, but I still love catching them.

Always been lightning bugs.
When I was younger, my sister, me and my cousin use to hit them with wiffle ball bats. I feel really bad about that now.
Damn kids.

Even though I voted lightning bugs, in Iowa we do refer to them as both.

I call them Fireflys but I have heard that refered to as both. We used the terms interchangably growing up.
