My ceilings have a light orange peel texture. I can't even tell the difference between that and perfectly flat. In a way I actually like the texture. Hides my painting mistakes and skips much better! It's nowhere near as obvious as popcorn so therefore I don't care!
Orange peel and other knock down is ok, they are usually flat and just add a little dimension, vs popcorn with is ugly and casts shadows on the ceiling.
When we built our house the builder had an almost $2K upcharge for doing knockdown vs. popcorn (which was included in the base price). It cannot be that much more expensive to do one over the other, especially when you're starting on a new freaking house. Any price difference has got to be nominal, yes?
Clearly, they know that people will pay for aesthetics.
That's crazy! Out builder only charged $600 to go from knockdown to smooth.
