Thunder Road was my first marathon - it was great for a first for me, as my family cheered me on at different miles - but it's not so great for the crowd support after you pass mile 18 or so (Bobcats arena)
If you like trail runs, Salem Lake in Winston has GREAT runs. I mentioned a run earlier - the Frosty 50k is on January 4th, has a 25k option.
I also have loved Charity Chase half in Hickory, OBX, and we have a local couples 5k - that is really cute
I don't live there but am going to visit family next week. Are you signed up for the turkey trot in South Park?! Its a huge race, great course and really fun!
I'm not signed-up for it, but have friends who run it every year. It is huge and runs a lot of similar roads as Thunder Road marathon. I've ran a LKN Turkey Trot half & 10k before...
Um, I've run a bunch of smaller races in my town. Charlotte 10-miler in February (will run this again). Race Fest half marathon. I haaaated Race Fest (it was hilly and I desperately needed more porta-potties on the course). I did a 10K Jingle Bell Run in Kings Mountain last year. Ramblin Rose 5-miler in 2012.

No, but a lot of my running buddies do it. I have heard that it is run but very very crowded. We are going to be out of town for Thanksgiving.

Don't run Thunder Road or Charity Chase then It's def hilly. If you travel to Kings Mountain - you should do the Apple Festival 5k in Lincolnton in the fall. You run through the festival before it starts and then afterwards can enjoy the festival.

What distances are you interested in?
Half-marathon and shorter. Maybe I could do a 25K. I do want to do a marathon one day, but something has to give before I can commit to the training.
I am getting more comfortable with hills. I just had a really bad day that day, and I was not impressed with the way that race was run. I would like to try the TR half in 2014.
The Apple Festival race sounds fun! I don't mind traveling a bit.
Otherwise, I might do the NC Half at the Speedway (super close to my house!). Depending on my distance next year, I might make a bigger effort for the Huntersville Half. I'm 99% sure I'm not doing it this year, I'm burned out.
I really enjoyed LungStrong-I did the 15k.
CallingAllAngels-the Ramblin Rose 1/2 was my first half post-baby. I was SO mad when they chose to combine it with Bull City this year (I did that anyway)... I loved that race! Thunder Road was my first half and I hated the course. Too many hills for my taste-Huntersville had low crowd support but a much nicer run, minus a couple short stretches.
