I don't know how the city folks came about this decision but they want strip clubs to come up with the money to pay for rape kits used in crime reports. There are some unhappy folks determined to reverse the decision. Radio guy said this morning, "That's like forcing everyone who walks into a McDonalds to pay $1 in order to fix the pot-holes in the streets".
Houston City Council has passed a strip club fee ordinance to help alleviate the city's backlog of untested rape kits.
Council passed the measure 14 to 1 on Wednesday.
The ordinance will require operators of adult entertainment establishments to charge a $5 fee to each customer.
The money will be used to process untested rape kits. The city has a backlog of more than 5,000 untested kits.
Supporters of the ordinance say the new fee will raise $1 million to $3 million per year.
Some strip clubs said the ordinance is unconstitutional and plan on filing a lawsuit against the city.
It's one thing to use a "sin tax" to help fund the city's budget and discourage a behavior (hello, $13 cigarettes in NYC), but I do not understand the connection between strip clubs and rape kits. Plus, that's an insane backlog...time to outsource that shit.
how much rape is going on that they need to start charging for the kits? I think that's bull they need to tax the registered sex offenders not the strip club owners
