The show is more of an affront to any organized religion, not just Mormonism. If you can laugh about your religion, you can see the show. My dad, a devout Catholic, was deeply offended. My mom, a devout-er Catholic, thought it was fucking hilarious.
For what it's worth, when I saw it in Chicago, the local LDS church was advertising in the Playbill. The ad read, "you've seen the show, now read the real book!" So they seem to be taking advantage of the show's popularity, even if they're offended, lol.

I agree that it is more offensive to organized religion. We saw the show with my FIL who is a rabbi; we were nervous to see it with him, and he thought it was hysterical.
It's pretty offensive to a lot Mormons (myself included), yes, because it makes fun of our religion. That said, I've never seen it and don't ever plan on seeing it but I don't fault anyone that does (I know plenty of Mormons that have seen it and found it funny). It's entertainment and a satire, whatever floats your boat.
I just hope it doesn't make people think that that musical is a correct and accurate picture of what it's like to be Mormon and what our religion is about.

How do you know if you haven't seen it?
How do I know what? That it's not an accurate representation of our religion? I suppose I don't but it's pretty well discussed in the LDS community and I've spoken to many who find it offensive and many who saw it as a jok/satire e that does play on some true elements. So, I guess maybe it might be, but I doubt it. I think it would be very hard to portray a very accurate picture of an entire religion in one broadway show. Not all Mormons are the same.
I personally think that if it was that offensive then they wouldn't be giving them money for advertising so it must not be *that* offensive. Shrug.
The adverts in the playbills said things like "you've seen the show, now read the book" and "the book is always better", so it was lighthearted.
Like I said, a lot of Mormons find it offensive, but not all of us do. I guess I should have said that the idea or the theme of the show (what I assume is making fun of our religion) offends me. But, I'm not going to get all up in arms about it. It's funny and I've heard it's good. I've even met one person who converted to Mormonism after seeing the show, so I mean, whatever.
I just get sensitive when people start making fun of Mormons and my hackles get up. My apologies.
While I do think that its satire encompasses all organized religion, it does make fun of Mormon beliefs specifically. Yes, I believe many Mormons would find it offensive. I found it hilarious.

All hearsay.
You really can't credibly opine on something you've not seen yourself.

You're right. I was just coming at it from the perspective of an actual Mormon who has had many lengthy discussions about it with various peoeple. I guess I should have just left my answer at 'yes, some Mormons do find it offensive' lol

I thought it actually had a very good message at the end, about how you don't need to follow all the rules of an organized religion to be a spiritual person who does good in the world. But I could see how devout members of any religion could be offended by that message.

Well, as someone that has read The Book of Mormon and have plenty of friends that are devout in the religion, I would say that yes, you would be offended. And while you should definitely decide for yourself, I think it's probably easy to deduce that it would be something that would be offensive and/or hurtful to you.
Which is why I don't plan on seeing it because I'm pretty sure I would be. I know H would be, he is much more devout than I am. But, I don't judge anyone who does see it.

Actually, the musical gives an accurate rundown of mormon beliefs: youtu.be/AidgBKGJx-c
Gawd, that scene with Elder Price and the warlord kills me every time.
This discussion has intrigued me enough that now I really want to see it. Thx!
I was curious if it was so offensive that I would feel bad supporting it or offend my Mormon friend. I'm guessing if the church advertises in the book, he won't hold it against me.

I doubt he would hold it against you. Like I said before, I know plenty of Mormons who have seen it and think it's hilarious.

Ha this is funny. My LDS grandmother-in-law sent out many emails about how it was written by the devil and no one should see it, ever.

Funny, I know a lot of Mormons (my husband left the church), and he says it's pretty dead on. The song "I Believe" is an all actuality a list of topics LDS believe in.

Exactly. I'm religious and thought it was hilarious. Am I going to be singing along to that song in the car? Probably not, but it was still funny.
It's offensive to just about everyone. I saw it and like it, but I don't get offended by that type of humor. If you have any sensitivities or issues with their humor, I don't think you should go to see it.
