So long as they are of reasonable quality, homemade gifts can be great! (it's like etsy, but doing it yourself!)
I am begged every year to knit slippers for my family. Every year, I knit a pair for each person in the family. They wear them until they wear thru them. Sometimes, I also knit socks for family. DH is particularly fond of these, although I think we're beyond the point where they are Christmas gifts...
My SIL might be getting a knit lace shawl this year. Mom and Dad will be getting socks. DH has asked for a specific hat he saw a photo of.
It's worth mentioning that my family has expressed a desire to receive these types of gifts.
I am fine with receiving homemade gifts, but I will not be making any presents myself. Ever. I am so not crafty. I am the complete opposite of being crafty. You don't want homemade gifts from me.

I have trouble thinking of a homemade gift I'd actually want to receive (well, except my niece and nephew, but standards are different there), but there is no-one we exchange gifts with who has skills to make a good homemade gift.
I'm grateful for whatever I receive ... that being said, whenever I receive something (handmade or store-bought) that I won't be able to use, I'd rather just have nothing.
I've never attempted to give homemade gifts because I don't think I could make anything special enough where people would be genuinely happy to get it. I can cook/bake pretty well, but I don't think my brownies are so out-of-this-world where people would love to get them as a Christmas gift.
My sister knits pretty decently and so we've gotten some handmade hats and scarves from her over the years. Her standard baby shower gift for her friends is a blanket and a little hat.

Ditto this. I love love love receiving things people make, but would not make something myself.
I made glittery cards 2 years ago and most of them lost the glitter by the time they arrived
I love homemade gifts, both giving and receiving! My siblings and I (there are 5 of us) changed our giving about 5 or so years ago. Because we're all married with kids, we do gifts for the kids and we do a handmade gift for each couple.
I'm a crafter, so I do scarves, pj's, picture frames, hair bands/bows, cards, etc.
When I want to give a small gift and not have the recipient feel obligated to give something back, I put together a nice tin of my homemade Christmas cookies. I think it works well for all of the parties we go to, and for coworkers, too. I just make a ton and keep them in the freezer, and pull them out when I need them. Anything left on Christmas comes with me to our family party where they get demolished.
MIL made us a tree skirt and stockings, and I thought those were wonderful gifts.
If someone has a talent, a homemade gift can be great. Its people who think they can make something and it ends up looking like it was made by a kid who ruin the homemade gifts. For me, if I were to do something homemade it would be food since I can cook and bake but I would never do something that involved sewing or crafting because I'm not good at that.
I made homemade bath salt scrub one year. I've got some homemade vanilla extract sitting in my coat closet. My boss has an open house each year and he's a bigtime baker, so I might bring him a bottle of it as a holiday gift. (I can't give anything more than that due to federal restrictions.)
I love homemade gifts! I usually stick with consumables--canned red and green pickled Jalepenos specifically for Christmas gifts or biscotti with red or green tea bags attached (winco had them in bulk bin, so I can get the color wrapper I like)
I love a good homemade gift, especially hand-knit. I was actually disappointed when my friend who is an amazing knitter got me a store bought gift for my baby shower. When I was broke in college I painted and framed small watercolors for my family and they loved them. My BIL is a great painter and has done the same for people. I've made bows and bow ties for the kids. I've received hand made quilts. We are a crafty, sentimental family!
We draw names for adults with a $50 limit, and I would never have a handmade gift be the only present, though.
Honestly, it depends on the gift (and the giver). I've gotten some that are really crappy and useless, but I've also received some lovely, thoughtful homemade gifts.
I think I'm going to give my coworker pimento cheese for Christmas. I made it for our division picnic a few weeks ago and he hasn't quit raving about it. He also doesn't cook (or even mix things together apparently), so this was the first homemade pimento cheese he had ever eaten! We don't normally exchange gifts, so I won't be embarrassed about it being a modest gift.
Otherwise--I am not crafty at all and avoid making things in general. LOL

I've loved a few of the ones I've received. One of my sisters almost always has no money but is an amazing artist. I've got various gifts from her hanging all over my house.
I'm generally not crafty enough to make homemade gifts myself. I had one friend do put the dry ingredients for a cookie recipe in a mason jar and decorated the top. I could do something like that if I had to ever.

Last year I made a body scrub as an addition to a small gift. My friends really loved it but I was still insecure about doing it. I really love homemade gifts, but some of them can really be botched up.
I like homemade gifts so long as they aren't items that have to be displayed prominently in my home. My SIL made a picnic blanket for us one year. It was great. It has a waterproof bottom and a cute patchwork top. I enjoy that I can use it when I need it and put it away in a closet when I don't. Another year we received a magnetic chalkboard with cute moulding around the edge. It was also great but was something I would need to hang on my wall and I didn't want to. We didn't really use it and it just became an extra thing to have to hang up and display. It was painted to match my kitchen and if it wasn't hung up it was sort of obvious.
This year we are making personalized mugs for the family with assorted cocoa mixes (these will be purchased). We are using a glass etching cream and cricut cut outs of the persons name on a simple glass mug. I know my nieces and nephews will enjoy having something that has their name on it and if everyone else hates it I will never know. They can put it in a cupboard and close the door and I will have no idea. They won't need to leave it on the counter every time I come over.

I like homemade gifts. I would love a wreath for the front door. It seems like making 4 of these would be cheaper than buying one, since the materials come in larger quantities than I need for one. I also like food. The pimiento cheese is a good idea. The only things I don't really like are candles, since I only use them when the power is out, and sachets, someone gave one several years ago. I threw It in with my sweaters and had to have them all dry cleaned because the smell made my eyes swell shut. I would also like things like aprons, dish towels, pot holders, pillow cases, pots for flowers or little painted bowls to hold things or to eat on, lots of things apparently.
I'm making scrapbooks for my parents and grandparents. It is not actually MM, because I still spend a fair amount on supplies even with coupons, but my relatives don't actually need anything and they enjoy getting the pictures.
My brother made homemade Kahlua one year. Yum. And my boss made limoncello A friend and I swap baked goods and recipes each year.
I knit. So far this season I've made an ornament, a scarf, and cabled fingerless gloves. I'm in the middle of 2 baby sweaters. Last year i made a shawl for my SIL
